I have been working at Occam Networks

    Pros

Good work environment, strong engineering team. Start up feel without start up hours. Nice facilities, rec room pool/ping pong, etc. Good place if you are experienced and self driven. Small enough place where an individual can have an impact, if they can figure out the ropes and drive themselves.

    Cons

Ridiculous schedules, but no consequences for not meeting them. Senior Management wants good news to present to the board, willing to ignore reality to do so. Some improvement in engineering recently, with push from middle management to improve scheduling. Pathetic strategic marketing, unable to define new products, could fire entire PLM staff and let engineering drive all product decisions without much impact to new product delivery.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need new leadership at the top, senior management has given up by agreeing to aquisition by major competior. If the deal doesn't go through the company desperately needs new blood at the CEO position. Company needs stronger processes and better quality control, resources and accountability need to be applied, not just talk from senior management. Need some marketing/PLM that can commit to product requirements in a timely fashion, not after engineering has already started the project.

    Pros

The management and employees are mostly friendly and easy to get along with. Very little politics compared to most other companies. Work-life balance is pretty good. Management sets goals and leaves you alone to get the job done. Telecommuting was encouraged.

    Cons

Typical, small company challenges - lack of resources. Many things didn't have clear owners.
Senior management could be stronger with corporate vision and strategy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time to define the corporate vision and communicate it with the whole company.

    Pros

Open to new ideas and operations team helps to implement new ideas that will aid in growth and efficiency.

    Cons

Lot of work, not for people who just want to do their job. There is always extra that needs to be done.

    I worked at Occam Networks

    Pros

Nice work environment (perks like pool tables, ping pong, sodas, coffee, etc). Vey open to allowing employees to telecommute when appropriate.

    Cons

Incompetent management!!! If you don't suck up to management, you don't have a chance in this company. It is all about show and not how well you do your job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out of the 'old boys club' mentality and bring in some real talent if you want this company to compete and grow.
