    Pros

Consistent hours, most donors are nice.

    Cons

Management are rude (even to donors!), demeaning, unapproachable, operate on a good-ole-boy network (you WILL NOT advance unless they love you), and most of the time act like they have no idea what they are doing. They don't care about you or the fact that you have a life outside work.

Training for new areas can take months and the pay raises are meager for the amount of new work you take on.

    Very, very repetitive work.

Most centers are near low-income areas, and most of the employees come from the lowest echelons of society and have very ghetto attitudes, and they carry these attitudes to work with them. Expect them to act like your friend to your face and then stab you in the back at every opportunity.

Very low pay for the amount of work you do and the risks you expose yourself to.

When you go home depends entirely on how fast the machines process the last person. If someone comes in a minute before closing (most of the time someone does), you can face a 30 to 90 minute delay in when you can go home, even longer if there are complications.

    Advice to Management

    Quit.

    Pros

Lots of autonomy - the managers are not medical professionals so they trust the nurses' judgement as long as you have documentation to back it up. Good coworkers, drama was there if you went looking but most people could stay out of it. Pay was pretty good, about the same as hospital for a new grad. Lots of head to toe assessments, some first aid/emergency care. If you wanted to do nothing you could hide out with paperwork until you were needed -- if you like to stay busy you can cross-train to the floor and to the front registration.

    Cons

Shifts start at 6:30am, 9:30am, 12:30pm and go for 8 hours (or until center is closed). Despite repeated requests, management wouldn't allow the nurses to go to a 10 hour or 12 hour shift schedule, though other areas were allowed to have those shifts. Lots of silly trainings that happened every few months. Doctor only visited once a week and wasn't always available by phone.

    Pros

Very fast promotions! I started as a donor less than two years ago now I am assistant manager making good money and opportunities are still developing. I love working for OPI!

    Cons

The operating hours make scheduling fair difficult. The starting pay is $8.00/hr which is on the low side for the type of work.

    Advice to Management

Always train/retrain employees so that bad habits don't develop. Reward job well done. And I don't like the new rule on only hiring those with a college degree into management positions new employees with a degree are not better than the employ whose worked for the company for years. They do not understand the company as well. That might just be this area though.

    Pros

The hours were always steady due to the nature of the business. You got to know some people very well because of their frequency in attending to donate. Not a whole lot of growth opportunity as a phlebotomist. Though new donors were the most challenging, frequent donors were easy to insert the needle because of how often they would donate. Some overtime depending on if one of the last donors were to have a reaction that would require them to remain in the chairs to hydrate and eat something. Benefits were sub-par to non existent but at least it was something rather than nothing at all.

    Cons

Long hours on your feet. Some donors could be very difficult in personality and the company expected you to tolerate them unless they became overwhelmingly verbally abusive and of course physically threatening. Have to "watch" and listen to a limited repertoire of movies. Repetitive work.

    Advice to Management

Management was very good to the employees. They were trained to do the work of donor technician so they would be able to jump in if it got very busy and the floor was down 1 or 2 technicians. It would have been beneficial to have cross-training for the screening and intake services as well as the processing of the product.
