I worked at Odyssey HealthCare full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It is a large company with good benefits. Some locations might be fine to work at. Employees are not supported. Managers afraid to advocate for their staff. My manager stated repeatedly that the benefit of doing a good job is that you get to keep it. What an attitude!!

    Cons

Gentiva bought Odyssey which had a severe history with Medicare. Consequently, all sites are under scrutiny by Medicare. The company risks its existence if caught again being out of compliance. Hence, compliance has become paramount to the company and patient needs and care have taken a back seat.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People work in hospice because they care about patients and their needs. Gentiva has turned into a company that cares about its own needs first. Growing the company and its reach has become your priority. Desparately need to stop kidding yourselves that you are putting patients first when actions don't indicate that.

I have been working at Odyssey HealthCare full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Helping patients and family's at the end of life's journey is very rewarding!

    Cons

No longer about the patients and family's, completely numbers driven. Staff encouraged to "work off the clock" so that budgets can be met.

    Pros

There are no good reasons to work here-these people are a bunch of crooks who basically steal from medicare and rip off dying people

    Cons

There are over 300 hospice companies in the DFW area-every foreign quack doctor is the medical director for one of these "fly by night outfits" You will have unrealistic quotas and then get fired-check out their turnover rate!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some kind of a consience-How do you sleep at night? You have shafted so many people over the years-both employees and customers that you lie to about your services-You are a horrible disgrace to the medical industry!

I have been working at Odyssey HealthCare full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Team like atmosphere. I truly felt like the work I did greatly impacted the lives of my patients and families.

    Cons

Lot of call time. Changing system structure and MANY changes in staffing. Appears more and more that company numbers are more of a priority than their employees.

I worked at Odyssey HealthCare as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

The staff is very loving amd catering to the needs of the families during bereavement. Everyone in the office gets along well with eachother, sort of like a family. I worked as a volunteer and enjoyed helping out around the office and meeting all the nurses CNA's that came and went throughout the day.

    Cons

Hearing all the sad stories about the patients in hospice care and in nursing homes.

Odyssey provides care to patients that are dying so you have to be able to deal with these kinds of things day to day if you plan to work there. Even as a office admin. There will be times where you have to participate in the groups that visit the nursong homes and do actovities with the elderly people. Although some of the nursing homes they work with are really nice and treat theor patients well, others are not.
