I have been working at Office Depot part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Very flexible schedules, laid back management, You can pretty much do whatever you want here and they won't fire you unless of course you steal. I worked with people that would just not show up, no call no shows, leave early from their shifts, take extra long breaks, work at a snails pace and the Store Manager would never reprimand them. You pretty much have to be caught right in the act of stealing to be fired from this place. Great place to work if you do not have high expectations.

    Cons

Since the merger with Office Max things change constantly. Sometime daily. Bonus structures are all over the place. They refuse to reward the top performers. They refuse to carry Apple products so therefore the computer section is always dead. You'll be lucky if you sell 2 computers a day out of 3 customers that walk over. Pretty much the only thing keeping these stores alive is ink sales and school supplies. The customers pretty much call the shots at the stores. Management are so scared of getting a bad review and lowering their score they will pretty much let customers get away with murder. I once saw a customer bring in literally a 10 year old printer that looked like it had been collecting dust in the garage for a decade that was so old we didn't even carry the ink for it anymore and since he complained that it wasn't working, they gave him a $99 dollar refund credit towards a new computer for fear of him writing a bad review online. The guy pretty much brought in a piece of junk and they swapped it out with a brand new computer. It was actually quite comical. Try that at the Apple Store and see what happens. Its ok to say NO sometimes . A guy once brought in 6 different laptops to exchange within the span of 2 months because he kept getting viruses on them from going on porn sites. I know this because he told me straight up when I tried to fix it the 2nd time. They would just keep swapping out computers for the guy and marking the laptops as defective. How can a company make money like this?? No wonder the stores are losing money. Once again, I'd like to see that guy try that same scam at apple and see if they swap out his macbook pro 6 times over two months. Not gonna happen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sell the store to Apple and do things their way. You'll be better off.

I have been working at Office Depot full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great location, great weather. Team work is strong, colleagues are generally nice. Still digesting merger of Depot and Max. Culture is okay. Company direction not clear.

    Cons

Some uncertainty because of possibility of another merger with Staples. The company's revenue is in decline, so morale is not very high.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should be more transparent about business results and have more frequent town halls.

I have been working at Office Depot full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Overall there is a good, but not great, culture. People are treated decently and the company has a good set of core values. Compensation is competitive, but nothing special.

    Cons

Promotional opportunities are limited. Company is shrinking due to it's integration with OfficeMax. There will be fewer locations of both retail stores and distribution centers. Information is not shared widely but is held among a few key people.

    I worked at Office Depot

    Pros

this was a great place to work. until.....office depot and office max merge. since the merge this company has really gone down hill. office max employees has coming into the corp environment and basically they are pushing the remaining office depot employees out the door. and for as contract employees contractor are treated like garbage they are disrespected and treated like they are not human. I am a contractor at the corp office been there for about 1 yr..in it/ information security and there was some recent change in management. in which was not a good thing for me. because my new manager is out of the military. and he has no people skills and he has shown me that me doesnt care for people of color like myself. so.. i am currently seeking employment outside of office depot/office max. because i am sure i am the next target. because i am currently the only employee left of color.

    Cons

lack of communication between management and staff. if you are not kissing butt. you will not advance within the company. if you are a contractor of color. forget about ever being consider for becoming a permanent employee it just will not happen. if have witness this happen on many occasion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

eliminate the negative racist manager in IT/INFOSEC. its not right what this guy (JS) is doing to employees because of there race/ gender.

Ability to gain vast experience in a ever evolving digital world.

    Cons

Upper management and HR are very sneaky and cut throat. Lay low and gain all the experience you can before your number is drawn.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good company but not all departments are great

I have been working at Office Depot full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

They have a great on-boarding process to familiarize new hires with the culture. The main campus (hq) is awesome. The building is huge and has a car wash, dry cleaning drop-off, credit union, cafeteria and post office. The company also seems to care about employees and holds various events through out the year. I think the company itself is a great one despite the current hectic period.

    Cons

While the company is good, it's huge which means each department is kind of doing its own thing. Unfortunately, I am in a department that's very scattered and seems to be a target. Our processes change daily (literally) and we're held to a different standard. All eyes seem to be on the department and it's uncomfortable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat departments fairly and hold everyone to the same standard.

I worked at Office Depot full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Benefits are decent.

    Cons

Office Depot is bleeding money and they can only sustain for a couple more years if they don't drastically change their business proposition. The leadership is terrible and until they remove the old regime and replace them with innovative, experienced leaders, the company will continue to sink down and down. Stock hasn't been good in 6+ years.....that says it all.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out of the way!!! Micro-management runs ramped at Office Depot and usually, the mid-level manager are the ones with the new, innovative ideas, but they get stifled by senior management. Senior management is incompetent and has NO vision. Terrible leadership style. Terrible!

    Pros

Most people I interacted with are well meaning and easy to get along with.

    Cons

Management pretty much runs the place like an episode of the Sopranos.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The vast number of stores is a strength. It may sound counter intuitive but this is precisely where giants like Amazon do not have an edge. Adapt stores to the new landscape of what it means to supply the office and fight the competition where your strength is.

I have been working at Office Depot full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

(At corporate) There are opportunities to advance if you network properly within the company. The silos are starting to come down as more departments start working together. The office culture is okay - they offer a fair amount of amenities within the corporate campus such as the cafeteria, gym, credit union, dry cleaning, gift shop, massage therapy, etc. (though employees are charged for everything). They also try to do activities and events throughout the year like the holiday breakfast (all officers of the company put on aprons and serve a free breakfast to all associates, with games, giveaways and ugly sweater contests), tailgate lunch cookouts to start football season, family fun days to benefit the foundation, etc.

    Cons

The merger with OfficeMax, although a positive step overall, has put a huge strain on the "lucky" remaining associates. In many cases you are doing the job of several individuals with no end in sight, countless extra meetings and updates to management (since everything post-merger must be closely monitored), and promises being made by upper management on your behalf of ridiculous goals that you are now expected to achieve in a very short time. Most of the decisions made are at a level too high to understand what makes sense, and I wouldn't be surprised if they end up losing a lot of talent due to burnout.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When your associates share their concerns, don't just jot it down and set it aside. Try taking action to aleviate some of the unnecessary burdens that are being put on associates at this time. If not, you will lose good associates with whom you have invested time and training.

Also, we know that our current CEO is a turnaround guy and that he won't be here more than a few years - but we never see him. He stopped holding corporate town hall meetings (these have been standard for years) - these are now held at a lower level by individual departments, so associates don't know what is happening outside of their departments. My advice is to bring these meetings back and make yourself visible to associates. It's hard to trust someone who's never around.
