Pros
When you work in the retail environment and you have a good boss they are great on working with you on your schedule for school.
Cons
They now start the wages at minimum wage, and if you're young and tech aware, some of the things that corporate does don't make sense.
Advice to Senior Management
Management at the stores are good. It's corporate that needs to get its act together and bring things into the 21st century.
Pros
They go above and beyond for customers
Cons
The treatment of the staff
Advice to Senior Management
Take care of employees, they are your future
Pros
There was quick early on advancement. Also, there was a big sense of team when I was working there. Promote from within
Cons
Laid off a bunch of good people the economy got rough. Also got rid of nice benefits such as tuition reimbursment and 401K
Advice to Senior Management
You can not take away benefits like 401k especially when working at Office Depot, for some of your employees, is considered a career.
Pros
Good management and interesting industry
Cons
consolidating industry will cause one of big three to be taken over
Pros
Nice new corporate office building. Many employees (over 1,600) at corporate office. Friendly professional environment. Nice cafeteria area. Opportunity for growth, and a place to gain experience.
Cons
Very very corporate atmosphere. Cubicles resemble a call center for all employees below Director level. Due to economy there are limited bonuses or incentives. No free coffee.
Advice to Senior Management
Clean house and get rid of the overpaid employees in positions that they are not qualified for. Provide more training opportunities for other than senior management.
Pros
Good experience and sales comitions (in the past). Can receive rather good salaries if you know to sell. Comfortable hour scheme.
Cons
Sales manager are the heavers at the same time. No matter if received cargo is dirty, you will need to make sales in durty uniform or even miss clients.
Advice to Senior Management
Please give sales managers option to be concentrated on sales. Hire few more students to work on shelf loading. Promote good salers, not good porters
Pros
Schedule flexability, employee discount, mostly really nice people work there, and you can learn a lot about products if you want to. There are medical benifits if you work atleast 21 hours a week.
Cons
This is a minimum wage job so you start out at $8.25 an hour (true for atleast 2010, and 2011). Each year depending on your proformance you can recive an annual raise up to $.25. I am now making $8.50 an hour. This is not a living wage, and there is not really a way to be full time unless you are a manager. They push sales, and I feel we should be paid more for all the manual labor. Closing the store can keep you late. The location I work at closes at 9pm, and we can leave any time from 9:15 to 10pm. If there is a supervisor visit the next day we can stay as late as 12:30pm at night.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep in mind that we are being paid minimum wage for our services. Many of use give it our all, and are working here to make ends meat.
Pros
Good company for college student looking for part time job. You never have to work late because the stores close at 9:30.
Cons
Managers are just associates with security keys. Compensation should be more then what it is. Career advancement is not based on performance, but based on who you know.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more professional. Give all managers an equal oppurtunity to advance based on what they know and not who they know.
Pros
Lots of guidance and a culture that isn't cut throat. Perform and you will advance.
Cons
Doesn't have the best reputation. Are office supples a doomed industry?
Advice to Senior Management
Forget the focus on the stores, focus on helping win large accounts. Continue with the green.
Pros
The best reason to work at Office Depot is the focus on the customer service! You don't really find the focus on the customer goal as a priority hardly anywhere anymore!
Cons
You just never know what will upset a customer
Advice to Senior Management
Just ensure that the promotions are consistent.
