Pros
Good people and a great place to learn about everything retail. Since they have an amazing dedication to customer service everything about the business is tailored to the customer. This being said don't expect to stand around and never talk to customers. You must greet EVERY customer and help them with their purchase, upselling where available.
As a tech sales specialist you are paid highly compared to other employees and thus are expected to behave in a manner befitting a manager. This will lead to advancement and other opportunities along the way.
Overall i love working here!
Cons
Sales goals can be a bit high but thats what they are their for. Since commission is based on % of goal dont be surprised to see yourself doing 20% one month and then 5% the next month. Since each store gets freight every day you will be doing a lot of stocking and moving of heavy products.
Since they offer so many products in store it takes about 2 months to get a hold on everything.
Advice to Senior Management
My managers are great but they do need to take a more firm standing on employee productivity. If an employee constantly pushes work on others and doesn't perform then need to be told so before other employees get frustrated.
Pros
Very flexible schedule. Very good for students.
Cons
The burger flippers at McDonalds make more than the part-time staff.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay us more!
Pros
flexible schedule, benefits fair, mostly nice customers, employees actually work together to get things done. Have a good time at work with employees, but store manager is a micro manager.
Cons
over tasked, upper management not willing to make changes when needed at the store level. Store manager spends most time in the office. Only comes out to make sure employees are working. Don't stop and talk to another associate for too long, you get the look
Advice to Senior Management
remove ineffective management instead of letting them stay and stay and stay
Pros
Compettiive salary, commision, never boring always someting to do
Cons
Hard to get promoted from with in.
Advice to Senior Management
Why hire from outside when, you have peopl, that are capable and know the buisness already.
Pros
Bright people, assertive management, experienced staff
Cons
supply chain not structured for optimal shrink exposure; lack of electronic loss prevention systems in stores.
Advice to Senior Management
N/A
Pros
Everyone is friendly and nice to work with. Couldn't ask for a better manager. Able to talk and get to build relationships with customers.
Cons
$8.00/hr wage. When a tech depot service doesn't work out, it's on your hands. I know too much about technology and my skills are worth more than $8.00/hour.
Advice to Senior Management
Other companies are paying their employees starting at $10 an hour for work a thousand times easier than the tasks of a Tech Associate, we shouldn't be working for minimum wage.
Pros
The best reason to work for office depot is if you like to do boring manual labor for an insulting hourly wage.
Cons
You will be doing boring manual labor for an insulting hourly wage. Time goes by slow. One hour feels like four.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay your employees what they are worth instead of taking advantage of their desperation for need of a job in these hard times.
Pros
Have honed my management skills
Cons
No payroll to have a decent workforce on the floor,
Advice to Senior Management
Need a new merchandise mix(people only shop the depot for ink, furniture, cheap laptops, and copy center)....think we could maybe advertise on TV? Might help...don't ya think?
Pros
Flexible schedules (when the manager likes you), discounts on cool stuff, encouragement to learn high-pressure sales tactics.
Cons
Commission is only paid if the entire store meets its goals. You can make 300% of your daily goals in PPP & TDS sales and if your store doesn't make it you don't get more then minimum wage. Your 12 week average can't be more then 32 hours, so if you work too much they will cut you until your average drops and then over-schedule you once your average is down.
There is a "health plan" that is not health insurance (per the plan documents), it has a $1,000 a year payout maximum and doesn't actually cover hospitalizations, surgeries, etc.
Advice to Senior Management
Re-examine benefits. An employee who quits to avoid getting fired should not be re-hired in a management position. There should be more continuity across the company.
Pros
Good place to work if you are a student and want some part time work
Cons
They expect waaaay too much out of you for what they pay. You will get stressed out and the we are usually understaffed. They keep tabs on you for everything that you "attach" to laptops etc. They make you push worklife memberships as well as PPP's
