Pros
It is a great place to work part time, you are eligible for benefits for working only 25 hours per week.
Cons
I feel there is no real incentive to do great. It is easy to slack off but if you work hard there is no real room for advancement.
Advice to Senior Management
If I were to be able to talk to the President of the company I would suggest a way to evaluate every employees skills periodically
Pros
Haven't worked retail for awhile and was good wkg experience for me to get back into the face to face customer service and dealing with the public.
Cons
Not only do the cashiers have to "PUSH" the company's "Worklife Rewards Cards" if the customer isn't already signed up; they also have to push the PPPs (Protection Plans) if the tech guys didn't succeed. Customers would come to my register complaining about how pushy the tech guys were in trying to talk them into buying the PPP. One customer was so upset about the rude and pushy way the tech guy was talking to her I suggested she go on-line or call the (800) phone number and report him ** I also gave her his name. Not only was mgmt rude to customers - you can only guess how they treated their Cashiers on a daily basis. I got out of that hostile work place environment after close to 3.5 months (didn't want to leave until I found other employment of course). And, I left my employment the same way other Cashier's leave the company: Without notice as they just don't show for their shift and no call in as evidenced by the cashier who trained me who like working with (she had great people skills along with product knowledge) at the start of my employment there. She got tired of the treatment at OD and told me.
Advice to Senior Management
Have store managers and assistant mgrs take courses (people management skills) in how to treat and communicate with employees (and customers) in the store at all levels starting from Cashiers to Tech guys (Tech guys rule is what mgmt thinks- and they stand to make an additional commission on PPPs they sell on high end technology items). As I was told from a long term employee (and it was a tech employee), it all comes from the top in how employees are treated.
Pros
Very performance oriented. They always seem to care about the customer. There is a big emphasis on training. Not too much for entry level workers.
Cons
The hours can be long, especially if you are not working with customers. The training can be tedious sometimes, and the pay could be better.
Advice to Senior Management
There needs to be more hands on training as opposed to computer curriculum to help entry level employees succeed in their job.
Pros
Fun place to work
Ability to be innovative
Core company values
Field sales organization stuctured to serve our customers properly
Cons
Too much bureacracy
Company moves slow at times
Many decisions taken out of field management hands
Pay could be better given realm of responsibilities
Advice to Senior Management
Let the field make decisions - we are closer to our customers
Hold people accountable for performace
Reward creativity and high performance
Pros
supportive managers understands employees needs
Cons
there needs to be more investment in payroll in order to give a higher level of customer service
Advice to Senior Management
management needs to understand how much they ask of their associates. there are too many things that they ask you to focus on.
Pros
great company, the leadership has a clear direction of what needs to be done to stay on top. keep it going.
Cons
i woul like to see us open more stores, we need to continue taking market share from Staples, and OfficeMax.
Advice to Senior Management
keep the focus, continue to come up with ways to make us better in everything that we do. we will continue to support everything that you do.
Pros
This is a great company to work at. Hard workers have a ton of opportunities for career advancement. Everyone is treated fairly. The atmosphere is also very positive. Fun place too work.
Cons
Benefits have been cut too much.
Advice to Senior Management
The company really needs to bring back the 401k match. It made sense to cut it when the economy turned south. Now that the recovery is under way, the employees need to be rewarded. I would also recommend giving stock options to the district sales managers. It would be a good way to get continued loyalty throughout the organization. It also seems like the stores and the sales division could do a better job of working together to take care of the customers.
Pros
Leadership
Focus on Integrity
Performance based advancement
Innovation is encouraged
Cons
Associates who are not adaptable to change
Defeatists mentalities
Those who only complain to others who can't make a difference
Advice to Senior Management
Keep doing the right things the right way and it will pay off!
Pros
flexible hours and they work with your schedule.
Cons
Bad pay and management doesn't care.
Advice to Senior Management
Care about their employees
Pros
Customer base is professional and enjoyable to work with on a daily basis. I think we are making very good progress on merchandising and replenishment. The associates are very good, knowledgeable, and professional.
Cons
Office Depot is concentrating too much on political hot buttons instead of basic retail and operations. The culture has shifted away from being the best supplier of office needs to pumping warranties and services down customer's throat in hopes of gaining an extra few dollars.
Advice to Senior Management
Get back to the basics of what we do and who we are in business to serve. Our customers are in tough circumstances too and would love to have a partner in their situation as well.
