Pros
The best reason to work for Office Depot - BSD is the freedom. Although there is some reporting you are pretty much free to work as you please. Most of the people in BSD are also very nice and fun to work for. Finally, you get 10% off at the store. WOW! What a deal huh? Overall, there really aren't many good reason to work for Office Depot. The BSD organization is falling apart and is poorly managed. I would be very surprised if the company was still around in several years. Bottom line, don't work for Depot unless you can't find anything else.
Cons
The worst part of working for Office Depot is the lack of accountability of co-workers. I've never heard of an organization where you can email management or administrative people and never hear back! The culture is so terrible that you have to CC yourself and your manager on emails so that you can babysit the problem and your manager can keep an eye on the issue to make sure it gets done. In addition, the company has not adjusted to the times. Middle Management is overly obsessed with the number of new accounts you open. Not the $$$ of new business. What a joke.
Advice to Senior Management
Bring customer service back to the US. Change the culture!
Pros
Good pay, decent worklife balance.
Cons
Senior management is clueless. The current management has taken a once great company and driven it nearly to bankruptcy. The do not understand how to treat the employees on the front line and properly service their customers. Staples and Office Max are now out performing a company that was the market leader.
Advice to Senior Management
Advice to the board. Return to the basics. Terminate Steve Odland and the current RVP's and win back the customers. You have lost the majority of your strong management talent and the confidence of the workforce and customers.
Pros
You get a check every two weeks
Cons
The culture is not good at office depot. People are out to bring yo down.
Advice to Senior Management
To be more open mind.
Pros
In comparing the 3 big office supply retailers, the retirement benefits, time off, and health care are competitive and/or exceed the competition.
Cons
There are not any real downsides to working with Office Depot in the Kansas City area. Staples just moved into the market so it could get harder to bonus from year over year sales growth. I feel that in a couple of years however it will become easier to bonus with the trends of competition factored in and the great possibility that Office Max in the Kansas City Area will start to consolidate operations and close some of their locations.
Advice to Senior Management
Senior management needs to take a page from Office Max and really start to place emphasis on Design, Print, and Ship services. There is a huge growth potential in that business and is the primary driver for Office Max's success.
