Former Employee – worked at Office Depot part-time for more than a year
Pros – I've worked with some great co-workers.
Learned about management, customer service and upselling all of which have since been useful to me.
Once hired it's easy to get hired again, it's a good fall back job.
Cons – Bickering among management, managers have poor people skills. Store commissions aren't paid out based on your own productivity but rather the productivity of the store. In other words if you sell 3000 dollars worth of tech add ons (which I have in the past) but no one else in the store makes their quota you end up with no commission.
Customers are pushy and mean, employees are paid far too little and as a consequence are disgruntled and do as little as they can possibly get away with.
Advice to Senior Management – Put more into your employees, pay them better, give them hope for advancement, treat them like family and watch your profits soar. Your policy-centric focus is doing nothing for you. Focus on making your employees happy and they will pass it on to your customers.

Current Employee – been working at Office Depot full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Some good Colleagues, people who built the company have a lot of knowledge. Company realizes that changes have to be made in order to survive in the future.
Cons – Company doesn't know what it really wants to do. Retail side is getting a lot of directions... and executive leadership doesnt necessarily believe in the changes.
And the merger with officemax is making things worse. Industry is a dying breed. I probably wouldn't work here again if I had a chance to do it all over again.
Advice to Senior Management – Management team needs to be streamlined, and there needs to be less people giving direction. Executives aren't believing in the direction the company has taken. And ultimately, people know that the future is bleak given that you can get all of the products the store carries online cheaper because the company has decided to meet its goals through growing margin. There comes a point where you price yourself out of the marketplace.

Former Employee – worked at Office Depot part-time for more than a year
Pros – Sometimes a very easy going work environment.
Cons – Low pay. Constant favoritism, as I was working there employees who were charming and not necessarily good were constantly favored. They were not very understanding when you had an injury. Poor communication management often made vague orders. Low raises they were done yearly and were often things like 10 cents. Bad customer service: people often did their best not to serve customers because of low staffing on the floor. Reduced space for furniture. Low staffing. Office depot likes to rely on radio communication to make up for low staff but it barely does it. Waiting time in lines are often long because of this.
Advice to Senior Management – Staff your floor like staples does. They always have plenty of people ready to help.

Former Employee – worked at Office Depot full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Training and People development tools.
Cons – The company changes priorities from one day to the next. Retail Store Employees can be treated better. Benefits and payroll have been reduced to help pay for these ever changing "new Programs". The Stores used to feel warm and busy, now when you walk in they are dull and empty(low product, min employees, and no customers.
Advice to Senior Management – Re focus on the associates. Clean, full Store, friendly faces can still go a long way. Try it nothing to lose.

Current Employee – been working at Office Depot part-time for more than 7 years
Pros – - Schedule availability is flexible if you have another job or go to school.
- Work environment depends on the staff you work with. Usually that gets you through the day
- Raffles are done every month for monthly bonuses. This depends on your performance.
Cons – -Usually base your pay raise by up to 2% of your current pay
- Commission is only available in the tech department up to 20% but depends on overall store's performance
- Too many tasks to do v.s. what they pay you for.
Advice to Senior Management – - Take the time to listen to your employee's needs. They are the one's running your store so you're making an investment on the ppl you hire.
- Give reasonable raises. Employees should be rewarded for their performance and compensated for the cost of living.

Former Employee – worked at Office Depot full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – The hours are extremely flexible, and management is willing to work with you on them. I've also never been denied time off I've asked for, which is nice, since I usually only do so for family matters.
- Fellow associates are very nice and always willing to help out.
Cons – - Nobody in the store I work in finds it all that rewarding to offer Protection Plans anymore. We used to be really good at offering them whenever possible, but people rarely took them. It just got to a point where we knew we wouldn't hit our monthly goal for commission, so why bother? Where is all that profit going, if we're not getting it?
- The raises are miniscule. You'd be lucky to get a twenty-five cent raise in the course of a year.
- It's pretty much impossible to work your way up. Getting a management position is more about who you know rather than what you know.
- Though part-timers (as everyone but management is) are offered benefits, they're really expensive and don't actually cover much. Not worth it.
Advice to Senior Management – Get rid of the ISCE program in smaller stores. Either that, or give us more payroll so we can execute it like how you're forcing us! It would be nice to get raises more than once a year as well, and not such a tiny amount. Perhaps performance reviews every six months or something

Current Employee – been working at Office Depot part-time for less than a year
Pros – Great co-workers and an easy work environment.
Cons – Sales commission system is completely terrible, you can sell $2,000 dollars worth of computers and get absolutely no commission for it. The only part you get commission on is the protection plans. Also commission isn't paid for the month if your store doesn't meet its monthly quota on protection plans.
