Pros
Office Depot is a very fair company to work for. They do not discriminate against race, age, religion etc. If you have the skills, drive and desire to succeed, you will do well. When they had to make cutbacks (as most companies did in 2009) it was a fair and open process. I personally have been laid off from other companies when times were touch and yes, it is difficult to go through, but that doesn't mean the company is no good. It means they are looking out for the best interest of remaining employees, stockholders and customers. Quarterly Town Hall meetings keep everyone updated and in the loop as to what is happening in the company. The Office Depot Foundation is an excellent example of how this company gives back to the community. They go the extra mile to help employees with their personal lives and decisions by having health fairs, disaster preparedness fairs, seminars on financial planning, Weight Watchers at work and on and on. I am proud to be a Office Depot employee
Cons
Like most companies, cutbacks were made in 2009 to deal with the current economic situations and the company runs a little lean in some areas. They had to eliminate 401 K match which was a great plus Hope they can bring it back soon.
Advice to Senior Management
Bring back 401 K contribution and don't let the Sun Sentinel get you down. We all know they "spin" their articles and take things out of context.
Pros
I have an opportunity to make a difference. There are good working relationships with business partners. Lots of energy and purpose among associates.
Cons
As with any company these days things move fast and the amount of emails to get to in a day.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up the good work . Thanks for your courageous leadership through the Great Recession. You made the difference for us.
Pros
I have been with Office Depot for 14 years and have worked with some great people. I feel Office Depot cares about its associates and is a great place to build a career
Cons
Like all large companies you have a few people that are difficult to work with.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep it up.
Pros
I have not been with the organization a long time but have had the opportunity to participate and lead interesting and challenging projects, which have contributed to my learning and professional growth. The people who work at Office Depot are invested in the organization's success. Office Depot instills a family culture and supports its associates.
Cons
Need more opportunities for advancement and development for associates. The organization is still in its early stages and has opportunities to improve processes and systems. Efforts are being targeted to address some of these challenges already.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to break down silos in the organization and communicate important information to associates. Steve, continue to have meetings with managers, as it is very helpful to hear what is going on at Office Depot.
Pros
I've been at OD for over 12 years. Great people work at Office Depot. There are many opportunties for career growth. The corporate headquarters offer great benefits to associates. I will retire here.
Cons
Well the benefits is not like they used to be, but I can understand that being how the economy is now. Bring back the 401K match. Also our jobs need to brought back to the states!
Advice to Senior Management
Every company has room for improvement, but if I have to say one it will be Hire more skilled employees instead of spending money on contractors and consultants. And spend more time/effort in training/preparing these employees to do their jobs and rise through the organization.
Pros
Large company that gives maximum resume exposure and that hires very talented associates that bring a wealth of talent to the business. Executive Levels (CEO, SVP, EVP) are very smart people and appear to be stearing the business in the right direction.
Cons
Many levels of management are "home grown" and lack depth of experience that can be leveraged to solve not so complex process and performance issues. Accountability of Sr. Managers and Directors for having effective organizations seems almost non existent and therefore many processes remain difficult and delivery is inconsistent and lack quality.. Career growth and development is also almost non-existent and it's not very clear as to what it takes to move in your career path.
Advice to Senior Management
Executive leadership (EVP, SVP and Above) should really look at the effectiveness of the VP's, Directors, and Managers, particularly in IT. Many of them lack "principle centered leadership" and strong leadership skils and are not improving the organization. It's truly an issue, look at the IT Survey's and you will see a consistent theme of ineffectiveness, accountability and trust.
Pros
The company provides great opportunity to grow in your career. I am a long time employee and have enjoyed much growth in my career thanks to Office Depot.
Cons
In last year due tothe economic environment many company experience laypoffs and at Office Depot this was the same. These times of uncertainty were not fun.
Advice to Senior Management
please continue to keep up the great communication to keep us informed of the business.
