I have been working at Office Depot

    Pros

Great company with fair benefits and pay. Compensated well for results and recognized for outstanding performance. Good work-life balance and overall company culture.

    Cons

The Office Depot / OfficeMax merger has created internal difficulty and required significant training to learn both systems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With over 50,000 employees, there is a lot of knowledge among lower level employers. There should be a way to communicate ideas and for Sr. Management to sort and review information.

I have been working at Office Depot part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Not Mindless, requires some thought
    Management is hands on
Everyone expected to do their part

    Cons

    Corporate keeps changing the goalposts
Focus on extended warranties leaves your and the store's performance based solely on luck. Maybe a sentence or two of praise if you make your goal, you get lauded if you don't. 5% commission means benefits to actually selling them are negligible. The pressure to sell these means helping the customer actually means screwing them over by advocating anti-consumer warranties or straight out lying about stock. Focus on warranties also allows corporate to shirk their responsibility by pointing to lucky stores to prove the system works

Essentially, extended warranties makes each sale scary, instead of upbeat and customer-friendly,

Unlike Staples and Best Buy, tech people are not isolated. That is to say, management does not focus them onto doing tech repairs only. This is strange because tech services are also pushed heavily, and yet tech people are encouraged to drop their jobs and cover everyone for every little thing all the time, meanwhile copy center people are never expected to leave their post. Despite making up most of the profit for the store, tech is given a small, 5 foot desk for which to work on, and is given NO equipment to actually do it, we had to buy it all ourselves. We don't have our own computer so we have to backup hardrives from display models. VGA switches have been busted for months but nobody cares enough to call them in to be fixed so working with desktops is a nightmare. Management is constantly plopping planograms, product, and useless training material on our workspace.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just find another job. Corporate is incompetent and is trying to copy best buy without understanding how they actually work, and in turn is driving itself into the ground.

I worked at Office Depot part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Great introduction into the corporate world for a high school kid needing a job. Good team of people working together in different areas.

    Cons

Focus is a bit one sided to selling basically worthless protection plans. Electronics salesmen get treated like rock stars.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on customer needs and less on pushing protection plans.

I have been working at Office Depot full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Offers good starting jobs to get some experience under your belt. Fellow employees and management tend to be pretty friendly. Very willing to work around availability.

    Cons

Almost all training is made up as they go along, assuming you get more than the bare minimum. There is also a noticeable disconnect between stores and upper management. Many stores have abysmal internet speeds, hugely impacting productivity.

    Pros

    Great atmosphere to work in.

    Cons

Life balance can be difficult, no set schedule always rotationalunless you are a store manager then you will always have the best shift which is opening 1st shift. Dealing with merge was difficult now having to deal with transition to staples can be even more challenging.
