    Pros

Training, Work Life balance, progression, site facilities, mentoring, free parking, civil service pension, flexi, great annual leave package, variety of work. In the directorate I work in, the Director (Ritin Patel) is excellent and the area covers: Big Data, Data Science, Digital, Methodology, Technology and IT.

I worked at Office for National Statistics

    Pros

Flexible work, lots of variation in who you meet/where you're interviewing. Lots of training opportunities available if you're keen. Easy to fit your work around other commitments. Flexible contract, if you need to work extra hours to get your quota of work completed then you can (within reason) Expenses paid in a timely fashion and reasonably compensated.

    Cons

Some factors that affect your targets are completely outwith your control, ie weather, respondents being on holiday/in hospital but are still counted as a fail on your part as the interview wasn't carried out.Targets can be quite high and unachievable, particularly dependent on area of work. Far too much bureaucracy, field interviewers should not have this amount of paperwork in their homes! Safety may be an issue for some as night time working required, not ideal in some areas. Pay is very poor for the skill set required to do the job effectively.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leave the bureaucracy to those with offices and let us field workers focus on the job in hand, ie getting the interview!

I worked at Office for National Statistics part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Brilliant company to work for, massively target driven with good communication throughout the whole organisation. Lots of personal support given to ensure everyone achieves their own goals.

    Cons

A lot of administrative work to be done e.g. spreadsheets, inputting data. A lot of emailing between team members and head of teams was required on a daily basis.

    Recommends

I have been working at Office for National Statistics as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

    Easy work. Training fairly good.

    Cons

No money available to hire space for team meetings so there was no real 'team' just individual working.
Census Coordinator didn't seem to know some aspects of his job.
    Really boring sometimes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make money available for local teams to hire space for team meetings. Ensure people in a coordination or management position know their role well.

I worked at Office for National Statistics full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Working as a apart of a team with broad range of experiences and background made the job both enjoyable and manageable.

    Cons

At times the field operation felt slightly isolated as I had to manage a team without a fixed office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep encouraging your staff to work autonomously and drawing on resources such as networks of other managers and teams.
