I have been working at OfficeMax full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Easy to learn systems and procedures. Upwards mobility from within the company. Open-door policy. Minimal office politics compared to many other top companies at the retail level.

    Cons

Scheduling time-off two weeks in advance might not be easy for people who do not live by their calendar. Managements inability to duplicate respectable "Time-Management" skills within their subordinates can make for a very long day/week.

    Advice to Management

Time-Management is the most essential skill to obtain/duplicate in a retail environment. Acquiring and then teaching this skill to your subordinates, or hiring individuals who already have it, ultimately becomes the game changer for stores.

    Pros

You meet different peoples to work with and meet customers.

    Cons

Not very organization, needs more meeting so everybody is on the same pages and the managers need to listen to there other managers and associates to fix any issues.

    Advice to Management

Been open mind and listen because the answer is right there to fix the issues.

I worked at OfficeMax full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Learn very good techniques to sell to a customer and not sell for what the company wants, but for what the customer needs.

    Cons

Upper management in some stores can be hit or miss. You either have a great store leader and motivate the team and then you have leaders that are dictators and don't really want to help you improve and expect everything.

    Advice to Management

Treat everyone with respect and give all employees a chance to grow and improve! It might take awhile but eventually the associate will step up and surprise you!

I worked at OfficeMax full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Outstanding benefits and flexibility. Management was great, although this will vary from store to store. There was never a shortage of work to be done.

    Cons

Wage was not great, and wage caps are set fairly low. Pay raises are not merit based and are applied at the discretion of the supervisor. Since wage caps are low you can't expect a raise of more than 0.25 to 0.50 per hour. The only way to receive a more substantial raise is to be hired as a manager, although it was my understanding that managers don't necessarily make more than underlings. Don't expect a comfortable living.

    Advice to Management

Changes trickle down from the top, and I don't know how much influence store managers have in that regard. Brick and mortar stores seem to be in their death throes so I don't see many more positive changes coming. Ideally corporate should provide more advancement options for store employees as a safety net..

    Pros

It is more of a weekday business vs. weekend. relatively consistent business throughout the year spikes only for Back to school.

    Cons

Was a great company to work for when it was OfficeMax. Office Depot merger was not good for the employees. Company doesn't respect its employees like OfficeMax does.

    Pros

The culture is "customer first" and the reputation of the company seems to be very positive in terms of service outside of the company. Vacation is above average (2 weeks to start, up to 4 after 5 years) and days off aren't usually hard to come by. Details (and closures) from big merger with OfficeDepot in 2013 are still being worked out.

    Cons

The pay isn't the greatest and raises are somewhat measly. Also, the career paths are minimal. Ordering system needs to be seriously revamped (not upgraded, just re released so that it makes sense.

    Advice to Management

Put some snax in the breakroom. Upgrade ancient register systems. If you add something new, TAKE AWAY the old system or device.
