Pros
Officemax has made ground this past year after everything started going down hill in 2008. For all the bad reviews people have to remeber that not one store was closed last year unlike Office Depot. If you work hard and make friends in the right places you can move up very quickly.
Cons
Not much say in the way the stores are ran.
Promotions Come slowly unless you know someone.
Advice to Senior Management
Accountablity is talked about all the time but I rarely see any Store Manager getting let go for poor performance after they have single handly taken a store into the ground.
Pros
Highly name recognition
Sold products that everybody needs
OK benefits, decent time off
Cons
Managers showed favoritism and limited growth of those individuals they did not like
Changed direction of company every few years
When on vacation, still had to respond to email and other activities, no 'escaping'
Advice to Senior Management
Don't show favoritism, ask employees where they would like to grow with company and then work to make it happen.
Pros
Great learning experience of basic selling strategies. Base pay is higher than similar companies.
Cons
There is only one way of doing things in this region's management's opinion. If you don't like the management's way, feel free to hit the door. Any previous experience or success is meaningless. Cold-calling in this industry is very challenging ... gatekeepers are savvy and office supplies are not high on anyone's priority list. Lack of reporting is a big challenge with many loopholes that keep reps from meeting assigned goals.
Advice to Senior Management
Sales Reps usually know exactly what they need to do to be successful. Listen to their feedback and fix your broken model.
