I have been working at Ogilvy & Mather

    Pros

The people are great - smart, talented, funny, and generally awesome to be around. The people who work at Ogilvy are often times what make other people stay. Benefits are nice - we get the week between Christmas and New Year's off, which is great.

    Cons

Work-life balance is hard to achieve here. In my experience, direct managers are very appreciative of their team members but beyond that, it's very rare to be rewarded for hard work. Many people get stuck in their position for years - underpaid and overworked with little to no support. All of this depends largely on the accounts you work on, but for the most part people - especially in account management - never seem to be able to catch up because they are buried in work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep fostering good office culture, but find a way to reward and retain the best talent - otherwise, they'll keep leaving for other agencies.

    Pros

There's a bravado that comes with working at Ogilvy. We've got big global clients, smart people, and top-notch facilities. Ogilvy does a lot to foster the culture of the agency too with frequent events, free booze, live bands, and even celebrity guest speakers.

    Cons

You realize quickly that there are so many amenities because they never want you to leave. As in, like, leave to go home. 12-hour days are normal. Good luck making any evening plans during the week, unless those plans involve co-workers and Landmark across the street, so you can come back to the office after those beers and keep working. But if you're on a good account, maybe you won't mind.

    Pros

Smart, mostly nice people. Access to A-list global client roster. Ability to big, cool work.
    Founds some amazing lifelong mentors.

    Cons

Very big - you'll need to learn how to navigate your way around and make relationships to get your work done.
You'll need to find for raises and be your own advocate.

    Pros

People, flex work arrangements, generous holidays, ample social activities.

    Cons

Raises (or lack thereof), which are controlled by senior management. Process change involves vetting of too many people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on the benefits you can provide.

    Pros

Good compensation, great environment to work at, hard-working people

    Cons

Not really doing anything groundbreaking. Clients like SCJ and Unilever stifle the creativity of campaigns. How can we do anything cool if the clients don't want to take risks?

I have been working at Ogilvy & Mather full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great brand recognition and top quality people. Ogilvy corporate culture is very strong and they do a good job reminding you why they are the best of the best. The top creative that comes out of the building is truly world-class. I genuinely like most of the people I work with.

    Cons

Zero work-life balance. Good luck if you want to take an evening class, or even schedule dinner with friends. WPP policy is not to give raises, regardless of performance, which they never measure anyway. Bad behavior at senior level is not only tolerated but respected.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire leaders of people at Managing Director level and above, not just business builders. Leaders will inspire their people under intense circumstances and should be evaluated not just on contribution margin, but team retention and creative excellence. Make 360 feedback mandatory.

I worked at Ogilvy & Mather full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Unbelievably fun and interesting atmosphere. If you're on the right team, you'll love your boss and management. Surrounded by hard working people you genuinely enjoy getting to know. Excellent benefits and vacation time.

    Cons

Ogilvy using its name as a crutch. Hopes people will hold out for a pitiful raise every 5 years just because they work at a place with "Ogilvy" on the door. Management has little say on how much or who gets raise pool funds. All controlled by WPP and has a tendency to skew toward account management when it does come through.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Competitive raises and promotions will help you retain solid talent.

pay could be better plus opportunity to increase salary each year upon review would be a huge perk to retain employees
