I have been working at Ohio Department of Job and Family Services full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Salary structure, diversity, you can stay busy. Learn a lot about government and programs.

    Cons

Who you know gets you promoted. Leadership severely lacks vision, management basics, does not understand the mechanics of programs and changes fundamental processes without calculating the effects. Create reports and more reports of the same data justifying existences.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote qualified people that know how programs work instead of your friends. Learn basic management principals that apply to the public sector.

Managers are hired based on who they know in spite of their lack of knowlege relevant to the section & team they support

I have been working at Ohio Department of Job and Family Services full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Most staff are knowledgeable and helpful. Great benefits. Salary increases just for working another year.

    Cons

If the majority of your experience is with the private sector this agency is not for you. Culture is lazy and political. Going above and beyond is not acknowledged or rewarded.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are the issue...there needs to be a 360 degree evaluation system for ALL employees. There are managers throughout esp. recent hires in OFC that have no business in this organization at that level. It's very disappointing as a long term employee to see the low caliber of managers and lack of knowledge these individuals have. There are serious issues with Ethics and Conflict of Interest that are being swept under the rug. You are living up to the stereotype of a beaurocracy. MCWIC is a joke!

I worked at Ohio Department of Job and Family Services

    Pros

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Service's mission is the best reason to work there. You can make a difference in the lives of Ohioans.

    Cons

While the best reason to work at ODJFS is because of the mission, the senior leadership is often very difficult to work with. Many in management find it easier to threaten employees with termination rather than finding ways to lead under difficult circumstances.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on building management competencies, review and hold managers more accountable. Provide more training for managers, and for the line staff hold them accountable for their performance as well.

    Pros

    Good salary and benefits structure.
Fast paced enviroment where manager/supervisors have the opportunity to be more involved in business development than standard front line supervisors.
Ability to directly impact customer quality of life, with immediate feedback.

    Cons

Heavily dependent upon governmental funding for staffing and project management.
Union workforce highly resistant to change.
Industry lags public sector in the use of Technology.
Government funding is program directed which does not allow local agency to address local needs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Embrace technology.
Provide leadership for business model change; don't wait for County/Local agencies to develop/lead change requirements.

I have been working at Ohio Department of Job and Family Services

    Pros

ODJFS management and staff care about employees - especially employees who work hard. The salaries are generally in line with market rates.

    Cons

Top management positions are, for the most part, political appointments. This contributes to a lack of leadership stability and vision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Update the mission and structure of the organization to fit with a changing health insurance industry. Communicate vision clearly and consistently.
