Great entry level experience as a College Intern

I have been working at Ohio Environmental Protection Agency as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Depending on your position, you may frequently find yourself on lakes or in streams. Fun to be paid for that. Tons of exposure to regulations, which will be useful both in the private and public sector. Also an opportunity for young professionals to gain exposure to many different fields that may be of interest.

    Cons

If you're stuck in the office, not my cup of tea.

I have been working at Ohio Environmental Protection Agency full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Like many government jobs, the employment is stable.

    Cons

Lack of leadership. Conflicting information. Blanket policies instead of dealing with problems. No opportunities for career growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Use your employee's talents! There is a lot of talent that is not utilized. Pretend to care about your staff.

I have been working at Ohio Environmental Protection Agency full-time

    Pros

    - There are very bright, motivated, and caring people at the agency, from the administrative staff to the scientists
    - Never take work home / predictable hours for most staff
    - Work for the public good
    - Low-stress (hard for them to fire you)
    - Decent pay and benefits, all things considered
    - If you work in a 'field office' as an inspector, you will have a very interesting (and probably rewarding) job

    Cons

    - Advancement takes a long time. Probably 50% of the professional staff at my office have been in the same position for 10-20+ years.

    - Managers do not invest in 'professional development'

    - Current senior EPA officials seem to be politically motivated, anti-union (which may not be the worst thing, but it keeps salaries down), and don't have a desire to promote a collegial atmosphere (stricter dress code, no more 'flex hours')

    - The past two Directors have been very unpopular for their lack of connection with regular employees. Since Ohio EPA is a top-down institution (every 'big' project you will work on will be signed by the director), this stinks

    - Middle management kowtows to upper management and does not stand up for their employees

    - Benefits are good, but really only pay off if you stay 5 years+. Matching 401k on paper seems great, except that they take out fees so that a 10% employee / 14% employer contribution becomes a 10% employee / 8% employer one. I don't trust the pension plan.

    - Not a good place to be a young employee for many of the above reasons (most staff are 45+ and are waiting for their pensions)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Motivate people with positive reinforcement. Create a more relaxed office environment.
Follow the law. The Governor should not be dictating to the EPA its every move. The law is mostly based in Federal Codes, anyway.

Entice the old crowd to retire. The agency needs some turnover, and knowledge is too closely held by the people that have been there the longest. Incentives for well-done and helpful work (to the agency and the public) would motivate younger employees.

I have been working at Ohio Environmental Protection Agency full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The atmosphere is casual and fun. The staff are all highly educated and sincere in wanting to do a good job. Work schedules are pretty flexible and most supervisors are very accommodating.

    Cons

Sometimes multiple levels of management don't agree with each other and it can be difficult to know what to do in those cases.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Acknowledge employees' accomplishments. Listen to employees better.
