Something different each day
Some individual managers and employees where worth there weight or more in Gold for there professional and social contribution
Cons – Money wasn't sufficient for the daily BS you had to put up with from your Contract Manager
Contract Manager was a "Has Been" and deliberately set about undermining those that were working for him cos he felt threatened by the new breed of performing manager.
Poor communication and support
Poor ongoing training and team building
Poor planning and productivity
Advice to Senior Management – Get rid of you dead wood

I have been working at Oil Search
Pros – Small company so potential of learning from other departments. Learn together with the company from other bigger companies in the same business.
Cons – Because its a small company, techincal training is somewhat difficult to come by, especially if you have a immediate team leaders also learning the ropes of the business.
Advice to Senior Management – Identify potential employees with the qualification and drive to to learn by supporting them to further enhance their techincal skills in which ever their career interest path are. The retention of recent graduates is quickly falling, young team members capable of taking the company to the next level are leaving for better training and employment offers.

I worked at Oil Search
Pros – There is not much to think of except that it was a small company when I joined. Good for building experience on the floor, i.e in the field running around and making things happen, opportunities most big companies would not otherwise give you.
Cons – The salary is very bad with performance reviews not getting any action from recommendations. There is a culture of suppression and the HR couldnt be any worse. They treat you like dirt and their is a degree of segregation with national employees (Papua New Guineans). The average salary is below market rate and their cost cutting severely impacted investment in the knowledge economy of its empployees. The company tries to potray itself to be an organisation that its not. You have 10 people doing the same task...so either they pass the bark or they feel you have stepped on their foot when it comes to job execution.
Advice to Senior Management – Please change the upside down pyramid structure you have on your management. There are too many chiefs and very few indians. The patronising style of management with you townhalls should be a bit more creative, its insulting to have the same slides on you powerpoints with different colours without addressing the real issues for employees. Most of the Papua New Guinean employees in the technology side of the operation will be looking for greener pastures and this retention schemes you have is somewhat dranconian and ancient, please think up something creative if you are going to retain them.

I have been working at Oil Search
Pros – sometimes you get left alone to do the job. not often
Cons – ineptitude inability and lack of leadership of any senior manager
Advice to Senior Management – talk to your people yourself and take on board what they communicate to you. remove the climate of fear.
a recent survbey among 20 middle managers revealed that people just give up when trying to make a difference because it is just too hard, with the systems that management have put in place and the almost complete apathy of senior management. there is a perception that senior managers are greedy, and are pigs with their snouts in the trough
