    Creative and Challenging

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) New York, NY

Pros1. it's a smallish team of extremely smart people.
    2. good ideas and hard work are both noticed and rewarded.
    3. bad developers are treated as replaceable automatons and tend to leave quickly.
    4. recruiting has hit a real stride, and all the newest devs here are brilliant and appreciated.
    5. OkCupid makes thousands of dates a day and hundreds of serious relationships happen.

About #2. Since I've been here we haven't lost any developers who added constructively to the team, and some bad apples have left. There's no one sucky left.

Cons1. we need another conference room. it's sometimes hard to find a place to meet
    2. I'm getting fat from all the free breakfast

Advice to Senior ManagementStop caring if the site works in IE6 already. Practice your trivia skills. 11th place in last night's happy hour?

Fun place to work, if you're on the right team.

    (Former Employee)

ProsLots of smart people, unfortunately most of them are doing the business logic. Lots of perks and benefits though, it's a great place to coast, no matter where you are, if that's your thing. Standard startup perks like food.

ConsWhile it's impressive that they've done it, nearly everything is built from scratch—even server-side scripting—so you may find yourself contributing more to the product than your own career, if you're not on the core site team. You're going to be knee-deep in proprietary stuff. It's also not a very conducive environment for new ideas and improvements, there is very much an established Right Way to Do Things already.

Also, the build process is an absolute mess, and there is no QA to speak of. If you ship a bug, you are informed by a user complaint, followed by a sigh and/or smirk from your boss; finally it takes thirty minutes to push out your update after you literally increment cachebusting parameters by hand in all your files, among many other todos that you probably will have to write down. Many talented developers exist at OkCupid, but again, they are in very specific departments.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't be afraid to gather ideas for improvements and new features from your employees.

    Intellectual & Rewarding

Engineer (Current Employee) New York, NY

Pros- company is quick to recognize hard work (promote, give raises, etc.)
    - high level of intelligence of co-workers / overall intellectual atmosphere (almost all employees are math/cs people)
    - easy access to management
    - startup-like atmosphere in a company that's actually already made it (i.e. secure)
    - the work you do affects people's lives
    - NYC street cred
    - yes, you can actually use your job to get dates

    Cons- quiet work environment
    - sometimes slow to actually go live with code I've worked on
    - missing some of the startup frills (free lunch everyday, beer fridays)

    A Fun Place to Work

Software Engineer (Current Employee) New York, NY

Prosthe release cycle is fast - tweaks can be launched minutes after you think of them
your work at OkCupid really makes a difference in the world
    coworkers are smart and easygoing
the office is an open floor plan, so communication is easy
you get to work on some pretty cool technical challenges
the development framework includes the best HTML templating language I've seen and allows you to avoid less pleasant aspects of C++ like manual memory management
management provides helpful guidance when you need it without being micromanaging

Consthe open floor plan means a little less privacy
the custom development framework means a learning curve when you start
the development process is relatively unstructured. This is bad if you need a tight structure (like hard deadlines) to get your work done.

    Harsh

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsSite can be exploited for dates.
    User feedback often hilarious.
Located near an excellent Italian restaurant.
XBox available for use on thursday afternoons.

ConsEmployees are treated as replaceable automatons, in-company experience considered expendable.
Employees are explicitly and implicitly disrespected by management.
Enormous emphasis placed on the appearance of working over the achievement of goals.
Multiple and multiplying project management solutions appear and disappear, and are never consistent with one another.
Senior management members make demonstrably false claims about dating and engineering.
Top-down communication virtually nil, bottom-up communication generally ignored.
Critique of superiors' ideas simultaneously requested and discouraged.
Physical office environment is spare, dusty, and poorly lit.

    Draining

Developer (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsTo gain experience at a high traffic website
To learn how to not manage a company
You like proprietary technologies over sensible standards

ConsThe wheel is reinvented in ways that give little to no gain of value to the company
The founders have little understanding of online dating or dating in general
Very hard to find any pride in the work you do

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
