Graduate Research assistant - worked independently, it was nice

Graduate Research Assistant (Current Employee)
Norfolk, VA

I have been working at Old Dominion University as a contractor for more than a year

Prosindependent work that focused on my research
bi-weekly pay checks allowed for the occasional 'month of glory'
University covered tuition as well

ConsPaperwork must be routed each semester, takes about a month to process. Plan ahead or you won't get paid your first month of the semester.

Advice to Senior ManagementStream line the paperwork, awards are usually for a full year, there is no reason to spend a solid day routing paperwork.

The career opportunities at Old Dominion University are fulfilling and easy, especially for on-campus students.

Art Library Staff (Current Employee)
Norfolk, VA

I have been working at Old Dominion University part-time for less than a year

ProsThe careers at the University are easily accessible to those who live on campus or commute nearby. The amount of hours and pay is good as well.

ConsThere are not a lot of jobs to choose from nor is there a large variety of jobs. One can either work at one of the three libraries on campus or work in a fast food restaurant in the middle of campus.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou are doing a good job managing the employees that work on campus and the employees are happy with the work conditions.

Lack of communication....

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Norfolk, VA

I have been working at Old Dominion University full-time for more than 5 years

ProsOf course being a higher ed institution it comes with a certain sense of pride that you are ultimately preparing future generations to go out into the world and make it a better place. There are many people at ODU who are truly passionate about what they are doing and they want to make an impact - not only because they feel that ODU has a place in bettering the Hampton Roads area but they know the students have great potential to deal with many of the pressing issues of the region, the state, and the country.

ConsThis university lacks the ability to effectively communicate between departments and divisions. The culture is one where it is not encouraged to partner with other departments to achieve a goal. Because of that you have multiple missions happening with no clear strategy and very little rate of success. Hard work is not always rewarded and unfortunately that leads to a mentality of just doing the bare minimum. Mediocrity is acceptable and the leadership turns a blind eye to it.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere are several solutions that exist in the business world today to address the areas of communication and collaboration. I would advise ODU to start thinking of themselves more as a business in how they run the university and apply those tools from the business world. The lack of leadership in the upper levels trickles down all the way to the student level and if you talk to students, many are dismayed with the university and its policies and procedures.

Good benefits

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Old Dominion University full-time

ProsODU provides some perks for working at the school. The medical and dental coverage is comparable if not better than other institutions of the same size. You can take one class per semester for free. The gym is very affordable with lots of classes. Additionally, there are many family friendly events during the summer.

ConsThe campus experiences high rates of robberies and assaults.

good and occasionally great

Lecturer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Old Dominion University full-time for more than a year

ProsODU has a good working environment and the administration and faculty (at least in my department) are very pleasant to work with. Several fields have a excellent research and collaboration opportunities.

ODU has nice year round weather and is close to Virginia Beach

Very diverse campus

ConsSome departments are great and some are weak, but this is pretty common for most universities.

The location of ODU in Norfolk makes traffic a big issue anytime it rains heavily.
