I have been working at Old Dominion University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great environment to work. Great staff to work with. Very supportive administrative in all the offices that I have interacted with.

    Cons

Haven't had any down sides so far.

    Pros

The kids and adults are great clients. Jennifer Toomy is an experienced Head Pro and it is easy to see that she has been around the game her entire life. I love the college environment and the college players are always enthused to help.

    Cons

Unfortunately, there just aren't enough kids to give the assistant pro and college kids enough hours of instruction to make a great salary. If we can get more youngsters and adults involved in this great sport, Old Dominion has the staff to handle all levels of instruction.

    Advice to Management

I would advise the staff to continue working with elementary schools in the area. Maybe purchase a bus that can pick up the kids from their respective schools, to give parents another reason to sign them up!

I worked at Old Dominion University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I was in the Oceanography Department and my experience may not be representative of the conditions in bigger departments. I taught seniors and graduate students and it was an easy, enjoyable work. TA's for 100-level courses tend to be overworked. Department handled all employment paperwork in a timely manner.

    Cons

No benefits! Dangerous campus and surrounding areas. Nothing ever happened during daylight hours, but I feel like I was constantly getting safety alerts after dark. Parking situation is unreal! They are constantly getting rid of student commuter parking, forcing kids to park on the outskirts of the campus, which are unsafe. Parking passes are very expensive on top of being useless due to not enough parking spots). These are the only complains I have, but they are major ones.

    Advice to Management

Please rework parking policies. I would not recommend ODU to anyone just for this reason alone. Offer student health insurance to your TA's if you want to attract more career-oriented people.

I have been working at Old Dominion University part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    The professors are very accessible.

    Cons

Norfolk is still a developing market. Lots of computer science jobs, but engineers might need sometime to find a job

    Advice to Management

    Increase interaction with industry

I worked at Old Dominion University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Was able to work with the professors to adjust schedule and allow for flexibility with research

    Cons

Lack of coordination in the department. Since it was a senior design course had to work with students from various faculty members and all had much different expectations of students

I have been working at Old Dominion University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great stepping stone and starting point for any career; environment conducive to growth! Team-oriented throughout all divisions. There are a lot of trainings, events, and meeting orchestrated for professional development, new ideas/strategies, and common purpose.

    Cons

Because the university/company is in a growth mode, in some situations, issues or problems are solved on the fly. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does highlight organization weaknesses.

    Advice to Management

Professional development on all levels. Have understanding of roles and responsibilities from top to bottom of the organization.
