    Great Company

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsCustomers respect the stores and they are easy to maintain. Ample payroll and personnel to complete all tasks and keep the store up to date and customer friendly. Very positive company culture that dwells on employees strengths, not weaknesses.

ConsLimited number of career opportunities due to the size of the company. Some of the fixtures are difficult to work with and time consuming to put together.

Advice to Senior ManagementOpen more stores in the southeastern US to create more career growth opportunities.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

"Could be worse" is NOT a recommendation.

    Customer Service (Current Employee)
    Merrillville, IN

ProsWork is reasonably simple enough, at least in concept. They're somewhat reasonable about scheduling conflicts such as a second job or college. Under our previous management, we had virtually no customer complaints and were performing wonderfully.

ConsThere is virtually zero room for advancement in the company. There is a severe issue with management promoting the people they like over people who are qualified, with virtually zero consideration given to seniority. Pay raises are atrocious. After having worked there for several years, they're still paying less than a dollar over minimum wage, with no opportunity to move from part time to full time. Cleanliness is at an all time low, with the company having eliminated the maintenance department. While previously the company was very customer oriented in its policies, they've recently cracked down severely on their return policy, disempowering their customer service and putting even more work on the shoulders of their team leaders. The location is in complete upheaval after backstabbing inner politics caused a dozen people to quit within two weeks.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop hiring new management and promote veteran workers. People who have been working there for over five years should not be making less than people you just hired. The midwest district manager drove our excellent store manager out of your company (and over ten employees left with him) with his Theory X, tightfisted, power-hungry practices.

An easy job for one who cares little for advancement

    Cashier (Current Employee)
    Gulf Shores, AL

ProsEasy job if you're fast at ringing up transactions, wrapping breakables and bagging items.

ConsLittle opportunity to advance and from what I've heard pay raises leave much to be desired. We're talking 1-3%. Workers that have been there 6-8 years are yet to hit the $9/hour mark in pay. Also the store is incredibly dusty because they do not dust the shelves before putting out new merchandise. Cashiers had 4 feet of counter space removed at the District Manager's command which means we have less counter space and have to stop while ringing up a transaction to wrap and bag....highly annoying!

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs to follow the rules they set for everyone else and should strive to boost the morale of workers.

    GREAT

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsYou get to see a variety of different and unusual products throughout the year, especially the Fall and Christmas seasons.

ConsThere are not enough store location, that seems to be the biggest complaint of the customers.

Great merchandising experience for big box.

    Assistant Store Manager (Current Employee)

ProsDecent pay for managers. Good insurance. Good place to learn merchandising in a big box environment.

ConsLots of hours, 10.5 hr days, sometimes 6 days a week, salary. Open on Thanksgiving. Very limited advancement opportunities.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more aware of what's going on in the stores with the Store Manager. You have Assistant's that are running their stores yet can't get promoted.

It's a job, just not the best one.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Wilmington, NC

    Pros-Pays more than minimum wage
    -15% discount
    -Decent hours

Cons-You cannot receive benefits or direct deposit until after 90 days, even then it takes a while to process.
-Most managers are rude and ignorant. They try to belittle you over small things.
-Everyone tells you a different way to do things, rules are constantly changing, training is not as long or great as it should be.
-There is a lot of dust everywhere.
-If you're at the register and don't have a customer, you're expected to price merchandise, or the managers will get upset. Then if a customer is searching for a register and you're busy pricing and don't see them, the managers get upset. You can't win either way. Yet they hire a bunch of people, but can't seem to have enough working to cover all job areas.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is a better way of talking to people, the nasty attitude is not necessary or appropriate. If you train your employees better, maybe they will have a clearer understanding of what needs to be done. Instead of relying on your head cashier to convey information, have meetings and say what you expect from employees and notify them of any changes. If you have a lot of people quitting, think about why and how you can make your store better suited for future and present employees.

The can do so much better!!!

    Cashier-sales-bookkeeper (Former Employee)
    Charlotte, NC

ProsThe feeling of ´´finding the hidden treasure´´ shopping experience works perfectly for OTP (which makes it an excellent business idea). Prices are very good and some merchandise sells pretty fast. Another pro is the fact that they hired ´´special´´ people for bagging and carts collection (retards) which complements their social responsibility!

ConsThere is no security in the store (including cameras) whatsoever.
There are no employee incentives to go beyond the minimum job performance.
    There are no merchandise-market orientations.
    There are no marketing-market strategies.
It lacks a modern computer system.
It lacks a useful inventory system.
It lacks a useful accounting system.
It lacks a useful discounting system.

Advice to Senior ManagementPurchase and install a useful computer-cashier-inventory-supply system
    Hire a part-time security
Create employee incentives for job performance (minimum hourly wage only incentives the minimum job performance)
Design and implement merchandise-market and marketing-market strategies different for every state
