    Worked at Olympic Steel

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsStrong leadership who have been in the same position at the same company for decades.

ConsNeed to invest more money in needed upgrades and equipment. Some seems obvious but spending the money in the steel business is hard to "justify" to managment

Solid company, good corporate management, not so good local management.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Plymouth, MN

ProsCorporate management appreciates their employees and offers great benefits. Olympic Steel corporate leadership does a great job of managing through economic downturns and taking advantage of market opportunities.

ConsLocal management is not in touch with the extreme challenges faced by the front line employees. They tend to hide behind closed doors, and assign blame at the first sign of difficulty instead of coaching and fostering growth.

Advice to Senior ManagementCorporate management, keep up the great work! Local management needs to make a greater effort to understand what their employees actually do, never publicly embarrass their employees, and NEVER, when an employee comes to them and asks for help, say the following, "there are 24 hours in a day".

    – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Very Dissappointed for such a large compsny

    Machine Operator (Current Employee)
    Bedford, OH

    ProsIts a job I guess

ConsWages are terrible. No merit raises. Cost of living lower than national average. Get treated like grade school children. Management looks down at you. Haven't had a merit raise since 2001.Company expanding greatly but doesn't look out for its employees.

poor managment and lack of concern for employees

Crane Operator/Shop Helper Shipping and Receiving (Former Employee)
    Bettendorf, IA

ProsIt was an learning experience. I learned some great skills in many different areas.

Conspoor communication between departments. poor training . open door policy seemed helpful but not really since lots of things were swept under the rug. time clocks weren't accurate even though many employees complained about the inaccurate time clocks which caused points. the direction of employees by management was lacking

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunication is a must between all departments. training or trainers who care about there job.

    Detroit Location

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Detroit, MI

ProsGood pay, good benefits, and some of the co-workers haven't bought into the negativity yet.

ConsUpper management is power-hungry, back-stabbing and at times totally insane. If you can work in the plant, far away from management, it's a decent job. Otherwise, I would advise anyone to run if they offer you a position. If you value your sanity and your self-respect, don't apply for a job in Detroit.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit ! You are not fit to manage people.

    Bittersweet

    Inside Sales Representative (Former Employee)
    Milford, CT

ProsConvenient location, pay and benefits are decent

ConsTerrible professionalism, highschool-style office environment (gossip, clicks, dog eat dog, etc.)
This is not a place you can be proud of, unless running over and throwing co-workers under the bus works for you. The company does not train any level of management on how to supervise or manage, instead just promotes to position w/o the formal training needed to handle people pf diff. genders, ages, and /or races. Very male-dominated company, with a very aggressive, and sometimes volatile environment. Really keeps you uneasy, unless you become part of the many small clicks within (smh).

Advice to Senior ManagementTrain from up down on all levels. Managers and supervisors alike, should be reqquired to have training in becoming a supervisor or manager. Team meetings would also be helpful, to ensure every1 is on same page, and communication is clear.
