    Pros

Truly making change. Improving the lives of people from low-income communities through technology. Passionate employees. Opportunity to innovate. Company has made a major impact on policy and in communities. Global organization.

    Cons

Difficult fund raising environment. High pressure, high stress for non-profit work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create analytical framework to determine which innovations should proceed and which ones should not.

    I worked at One Economy

    Pros

You will get incredible hands-on opportunities, be able to design and manage projects, and have the opportunity to travel to some incredible places. If you do a good job, you'll have a real shot at enabling communities to access the information they need to break out of poverty. You'll be able to drive long-term strategy for the organization if you have solid ideas and go after them (as well as the funding for them).

    Cons

There are few policies in place, and you will lack the kind of support from a larger firm. You will do a lot of fundraising and proposal development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue supporting the young people as you do. Aim high for long-term growth and develop partnerships with larger organizations for bigger contracts.

    Recommends

I have been working at One Economy

    Pros

There are some really quality people here. The atmosphere is of kindness and respect. The mission is great, and the passion people put into it is amazing.

    Cons

The management team is full of talented, bright, and driven people, but they are not consistently trained or interested in career development or morale of the team. Management appears to spend too much energy on feelings/territory within management (politics).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is not micro-managing to learn what your team is doing, who is doing it well, and who is not.

Also - there is such passion and talent here. Narrow the focus, clarify the vision, and let the talent thrive.

  9.

Entrepreneurial spirit is great but the senior management can be frustrating.

I have been working at One Economy

    Pros

They are flexible about how you take on a project and the type of work that you do. They are good at assigning relatively clear goals. They are flexible about holidays. Great work-life balance, fun people to work with. The mission is great and people are excited about it.

    Cons

Very political. Senior management has poorly allocated money and resources. Can take a while to get anything approved and when it is, it feels arbitrary. Ignores some great ideas because they'd actually have to fund them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop mismanaging funding of everything. Stop giving people impossible goals to achieve based on not enough funding. Make sure our networks actually function properly. Finish a FY 2011 budget before August.
