I have been working at Ontario Ministry of Government Services as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

    Make real impact
ServiceOntario is a fun place to work and is a newer organization in the government so there are lots of young people

    Cons

Long projects that often don't go anywhere
Manager is not open to flexible work hours

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open up the 'work from home' concept

I have been working at Ontario Ministry of Government Services as a contractor

    Pros

    Good people to work with
    Not Micromanaged
A wealth of learning experience if you apply yourself outside the confines of your job.

    Cons

Management work out of spite not necessarily business need. Management has leveraged contractors to do work outside of their hired job, namely take service desk calls. If one protests then they are fired. Contractors are 2nd class employees that work in an environment that squeezes and leverages them while reducing pay by going to a single source agency, which deems their hourly rate as apart of their "business Model" while you end up losing a significant amount of yearly pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For a place that considers itself politically correct and morale, don't work with such disdain with your contractors because you can't get away with that behavior with unionized employees.

I worked at Ontario Ministry of Government Services as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Easy workload, depending on where you work. Jarvis street has decent office and building and good restaurants. Downs-view is near north york and not that great, no restaurant nearby, and also the most heavy workload area.

    Cons

For summer student, IT assistant has the lowest pay than any other summer student position and yet it is the most work intensive position, we get minimum pay.

As a summer student, no one care if you work or not, one of the summer student skipped a whole week, and did nothing on the job but watching anime and read book. Because of that, there is no motivation to work, and work is boring as well.

I worked at Ontario Ministry of Government Services as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Work-life balance, little stress, career stability, friendly coworkers. Office culture is friendly and there are lots of internal employee events you can get involved in.

    Cons

Repetitive work, little challenge, meticulous details in the work that are rehashed over and over again. Repetitive tasks that aren't very challenging.

I have been working at Ontario Ministry of Government Services full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Depending you your Ministry, you could be working from 9am to 7pm every day with constant overtime during the weekend, or a standard 9-5 at the more relaxed ministries.

    -Good work/life balance
-co-workers are friendly/nice because of job stability (and there are less occurrences where people stab you in the back like in the private sector)
    -Good pension

    Cons

-Pays less than private. I was offered about 20k +bonus more to work in a private company.
-I've seen instances where people with no degrees make close to 6 figures but do absolutely nothing because they are friends with the hiring manager.
-Wage freezes and public cuts to salary.
    -does not reward performance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1) Tax-payers and management need to understand that people come to government expecting to be paid less but receive a good benefits in return. The only thing happening right now is that salary's are being lowered and benefits are being cut.. All it does is force top performing people to leave the company while the dead weights stay behind. The people that could perform leave because their skills can get them a similar to higher paying job elsewhere (with equal benefits/worklife balance) while the people that don't have skills stay where they are. As time goes on, you're only left with more incompetent people.

    2) Need a way to reward performance.

I have been working at Ontario Ministry of Government Services full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

It's not archaic in the way it does business, compared to the rest of the Ontario Public Sector.

The pay and benefits are competitive if not better than the private sector.

Management for the most part is supportive in your professional development.

If you have family, this is a good place to find work-life balance with a 9-5 routine.

    Cons

The red tape. You can work on 10 projects, over 20 years, and if you're lucky, maybe one will be implemented over that time.

The pace. Everything gets done at the speed of molasses. Do not expect a fast paced, versatile environment. You will quite often end up starring at the walls of your cubicle wondering how to fill the day.

    Cons
