I have been working at Onyx Pharmaceuticals as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Co-workers are great people. Can develop life long professional relationships. Company offers many opportunities for development for FTE's.

    Cons

Highly political. Views from seniority will usually outweigh contractors. Evaluation is primarily subjective and metrics are founded on variable units of performance. Compliance policies are not clearly defined and many overqualified associates are threatened with job status. High stress environment due to individual placement of blame rather than comprehensive approach to systemic failures. No obvious follow up to CAPA changes. Management unaware actual workload and disregard audit trails as primary sources of information.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Evaluation should be based on clearly defined metrics for all positions. Subjective criteria should be solicited from trainers and parties independent of immediate working team to prevent conflicts of interest from interfering with evaluation process. Metrics need to be validated and performed by multiple people to ensure quality control. Morale is low and environment creates hostility among individuals when mistakes are matched to single individual.

I have been working at Onyx Pharmaceuticals full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits
Products are awesome and save lives
Lots of opportunity to take on new roles

    Cons

Bureaucratic- lots of meetings about meetings, hard to get things done
Uncertainty of Onyx's role in the Amgen infrastructure, awkward integration within Amgen
Talent flight - a lot of the pre-aquisition folks are leaving and being replaced by big pharma

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't lose site of the fact that Amgen bought Onyx because they weren't afraid to take risks
Remember that we are patient centric
Don't forget to compensate the people who have stuck it out

I worked at Onyx Pharmaceuticals full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good camaraderie, engaging projects, excellent telecommuting, benefits, and work-life balance. Excellent IT integration and strong systems in place. I really enjoyed so many amazing people I worked with.

    Cons

Disengaged upper management. Poor project planning. Awkward integration with Amgen. Perhaps not a lot of future as Onyx, because I think Onyx and Amgen will eventually merge entirely.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees more. There is a feeling that upper management is in their glass castle and doesn't pay attention to the actual worker bees at the company. Timelines seem like they are based on corporate agendas rather than realistic goals.

I worked at Onyx Pharmaceuticals full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Onyx (before being acquired) had a unique culture. One stood out attribute was the collaboration among employees. Patient centric was what drew people to work there.

    Cons

Onyx (after being acquired) has gone through some changes after the merge.

I have been working at Onyx Pharmaceuticals full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Initial offer was fair market value.

    Cons

Ever since the buyout, all of the good people are leaving. No work life balance support from management. The politics and backstabbing can be overwhelming. There is little to no direction at the Director & VP levels. When a decision is made and you as the employee implements, you are the target of all attacks, and not backed at all by the same management making the decisions. The majority of people who attack you have no idea what they are doing. Upper Management provides no training and will change your job at whim without even asking your opinion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide direction and make decisions. Stand by your employees. Support your employees and they will be more productive and happy.

I have been working at Onyx Pharmaceuticals

    Pros

Collaboration free from rigors of seniority. The company lives its values everyday. The new parent company, Amgen has prioritized the Onyx culture and continues to support it's innovative and patient centered spirit.

    Cons

Some confusion caused by changing faces in leadership roles

I have been working at Onyx Pharmaceuticals full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive Salary; Great Benefits; Flexible work schedule; Dedicated Co-workers

    Cons

The transition after the buyout from Amgen has been challenging. Many key employees have left the company and very little process in place at the moment. Limited opportunities for advancement now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Transitions are always difficult, however, interim processes should be more clear. The changes to day to day work activities are not clearly defined (overall big picture is often discussed).
