I worked at Openwave Mobility as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of smart people worked at Openwave in 2012 when I was a consultant there. Interesting technologies. Great opportunity to expand my skill set.

    Cons

Perhaps because I was a consultant, I wasn't privy to information on product direction. I felt that was missing in the environment as a whole.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate product vision more effectively. Minimize employee turnover, which was significant during my tenure there.

I have been working at Openwave Mobility full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good people at the working level, very nice office environment. Great shared corporate gym which is included with almost every possible amenity. Very close proximity to the above average cafeteria (also above average in price).

    Cons

Benefits continue to spiral down, which is to be expected with private equity. Overall morale also seems to be dwindling, as attempts to provide a 'sunny' view of the business seen by many as disingenuous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We all understand that you are in a difficult position due to the fact that the owner of the company takes an office in the building, but as they say, honesty is the best policy and most of my coworkers are questioning what is really going on.

I have been working at Openwave Mobility full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice facility. Long term employees are passionate about the product.

    Cons

No true referencable customers. Private equity play with back against the wall. Constant search and churn to figure out how to make the company work. Leadership spends more time worrying about their egos than managing the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a management team that is less focused on selling the company and more focused on providing value to customers.

I worked at Openwave Mobility as a contractor

    Pros

The office is located in a nice location.

    Cons

It used to be Unwired Planet and was splitted into three different companies in May 2012. There were so much office politics that it was difficult to get any real work done. The new Controller was more concerned about taking over the CFO position than doing accounting. The managers that reported to him were horrible, even verbally abusive to their subordinates.

I have been working at Openwave Mobility full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Can use new APIs, tools, etc., with little bureaucracy or opposition
Some flexibility in hours worked (although you will do much more than contracted)

    Cons

    Extreme micromanagement
    Meticulous timebookings required
    No trust of developers
    No innovation
    Extra hours expected without pay
    No feedback loops
    Blame culture

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Heavy handed top down approach is driving best talent away, and producing irrelevant products.

Too much micro management and fire fighting.
