Transforming firm that provides great exposure to problems that are challenging the world's top companies

    Pros

    - Incredibly smart and driven colleagues
    - Great opportunities for client exposure and continuous learning
    - Projects are challenging and intellectually stimulating; results matter to clients' top executives

    Cons

    - "Fabric" of the firm and top-down communication need serious attention; has been improving in last 6 months but still needs significant improvement or attrition will continue
    - Cash bonuses are non-existent or only provided when required for retention

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Bring back cash bonuses to motivate performance; stock options are not the only way to foster retention
    - Significantly improve communications and intra-office firm building (e.g., off-sites)

Killed by greed - watch for phony employee reviews

    Pros

None - management team is lost and trying to survive with smoke and mirrors. When the end justifies the means to make a few rich at the expense of employees it is hard to find a 'pro'

    Cons

All fluff and no substance - has NOTHING to sell but marketing materials
No knowledge of digital - either technology or data
Spending money like drunken sailors, with nothing to show for in terms of software or IP
hired 100's of employees overnight with just one phone screen, gave them very high titles and doubled their salaries just to turn around and fire them (and yes it is true)
Constantly running out of cash and telling lies to employees regarding salaries and bonus payments that never come
No longer any competent business minds at opera
EXTREMELY dishonest with employees and clients alike - absolutely no sense of integrity
Expensive services for clients and engagements that get renewed less that 5% of the time
Look at the writing style of the positive (3+ stars)reviews ...it's easy to see that they are fake. Management is working hard to fight the flow of negative reviews

    Pros

Learned from the many mistakes managers and execs made. Made some good connections that helped me escape.

    Cons

Management would lie to keep scientists around.
Managers known to encourage same day departure when you give your two weeks to save the company a buck.
Owing to clueless managers, the loudest apes would get their way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lost cause. They have no passion.

    Pros

the space was hot (until recently); superficially the story was interesting for Opera; there was great promise for building a disciplined consulting firm with tagalong recurring revenues

    Cons

zero consistency in execution. The CEO had a new strategy every day. Sycophants surround him and no one is willing to tell the emperor he isn't wearing any clothes

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

probably too late to save the place without entirely new leadership; significant job cuts; and a renewed build it up again focus on the consulting w selected recurring revs model.

    Pros

Smart and friendly employees, good place to learn.

    Cons

Management is a disaster, the top leaders do not care what the scientists are thinking, they use lies to keep employees, no communications from the leadership to bottom employees, rumors are everywhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think the COO should be the person to be fired first. It was her who leaked the rumor that the company was running out of cash by the end of March 2013. It created panic among employees and people started looking for an exit more actively. Ironically, this lady later was promoted to be the co-COO and started laying off people.

If you're looking for a company with substance, opportunities and work-life balance, look elsewhere

    Pros

Great to get your feet wet; great camaraderie among junior consultants.

    Cons

Low set of values among top leadership, expect to be treated accordingly. Limited true expertise among the topics on which Opera declares itself as thought leader (big-data / sourcing), which often results in limited value to the client.

    Pros

    Fairly flexible schedule
    4 weeks vacation
    Lunch provided on Friday
    Opportunity to learn new skills
    Friendly staff

    Cons

It feels like the company has lost its direction and is losing a lot of employees. We just got a lot of money from investors but it seems to be going quick on helping us find our way again.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate with each other so we can all head in the same direction. Let the employees know what's going on within the company. Find out why we are losing so many employees lately. It's bad for morale.

    Mixed Experience, Failing Company

Current Employee - Senior Software Engineer  in  San Diego, CA
Current Employee - Senior Software Engineer in San Diego, CA

    Pros

Great career building experience in a very hot market (Predictive Analytics). The scientists/modelers are profoundly collaborative people who are have great faith in software (not necessarily software engineers). Flexible career options. Friday lunches, happy-hour, high-tea. Good community of people who are sincerely trying to succeed.

    Cons

Lack of IT and computing infrastructure conforming to industry standards is holding both analytics and software divisions. Dev-Ops team, which was functional, just disappeared entirely. Company has been steadily losing employees (about 1-3 a week) and laid-off all hiring staff in US. Factions between and within various offices deadlock any meaningful software development, in turn causing significant cash-burn without any enabling revenue. Competing in over-saturated markets because of several employee's and manager's history with Fair-Isaac

    Opera Getting Its Act Together

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Brilliant people to work with. Very cool projects. Much better communication. Deals starting to take shape at Opera. No doubt prior management had issues but now things seem to starting to take hold. Good to see new outside talent coming in. Recent deal closures and new outside relationships are real and with some of largest companies on the planet.

    Cons

Still has work to do in getting company and messaging aligned. Some leaders still need help. Stop chasing tails.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stay focused. Keep on the path and stick to the current organization that has been put in place. Review compensation program for everyone.

    All Sparkle No Substance

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

    Hard working and bright employees
    Flexible hours

    Cons

Key positions in management have been held by people because they have been with the company from the beginning and not because of merit or qualification. Here is the brief summary of the management.
CEO - Waiting for his golden parachute
COO - Redefining the word "wannabe"
CSO - Madeup and non-existant - cleanup needs to start from here
    CTO - Scamster
PMO - Junior Scamster aka making up his own work

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should consist of people with good experience and credentials . whether in consulting or product development
