I have been working at Opex

    Pros

Great entry level job. Boss is great. See him once in a while. Relaxed place to work. Work alone and have freedom when not busy.

    Cons

Pay is low. Bonuses based on machines service. Customers can drop coverage and change pay. Can't advance. Biased when awarding techs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't count on the same guys to do all the work and open your eyes. Since youre never around you have no clue what goes on.

I worked at Opex full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Never laid off but was getting close due to a loss of customer accounts.

    Cons

Dying business market, when I started there were 15 service accounts in the region, when I left there were only 5.

Very low pay with a weekly bonus that was used as carrot in front of the horse. Made a mistake on your weekly paperwork? No problem, you only lost part of your bonus.

Regional management was a joke. Uneducated, clueless, short fuse, bad attitude, constantly showed favoritism, unprofessional, condescending...... A mild way to describe the Regional manager I had the unpleasant experience of working for.

Communication and interaction with upper management was disgraceful. They acted as if they were too good to interact with technicians.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a lesson on running a successful company. Hire decent managers to run the field service regions. Don't hire internal employees with zero post secondary educations just because they will work long hours for little pay. Spend a little money and get some decent management and maybe, just maybe you won't have to spend so much money training new technicians year after year.

Loved the job I did, regional Management was horrible causing a high technician turnover rate.

I worked at Opex full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Family owned business so no fear of a buyout. The work was steady and no layoffs.

    Cons

Not sure why they hire unqualified, immature people for regional field service management but the technician turnover rate if very high because of this fact. Technicians are treated like the stepchild in the company. The mail processing business is on the decline so they are struggling to create new products and enter new markets. They don't test products enough before releasing for sale so the field technician are stuck trying to make the machines run properly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire some regional managers that have a clue on how to manage their team.

I worked at Opex full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

In a good territory it's possible to make a very high income with commissions and bonuses. Very high tech products with strong reputation and incredible support.

    Cons

Management structure is very flat so there are extremely limited opportunities for advancement in the company. Not all territories are alike and there is a huge disparity with required travel, sales and bonus potential.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand that the Sales Engineers territories have more impact on sales volumes than the skill of the sales person and efforts put forth.

I have been working at Opex full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Financially stable (they carry zero debt)

    Good health benefits and 401K

No layoffs in the company's history

    Climate controlled work environment

    Innovative products

    Good coworkers

    Cons

Ivory tower management style (management does not involve employees when planning and plans are often difficult to implement and result in lower productivity and/or efficiencies).

    Limited advancement opportunities.

Ownership too far removed from operations resulting in middle and lower management's sometimes questionable behavior.

Low pay and capped annual raises (based less on merit and more across the board percentage).

Thankless job. Management seldom offers praise even when employees work 60+ hour work weeks to meet near impossible deadlines and even set new records.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better utilize your employees' knowledge base and say thank you once in a while.

    I worked at Opex

    Pros

Make your own schedule throughout your day
    minimum supervision
    training programs
    better than a desk job
this is a good entry level job

    Cons

Management not very involved with field technicians
Low pay and raises are horrible
    micro-manage employees
    benefits package is very basic

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get more involved in field work to support technicians and create a better tech support line for technicians in need. Also upper management should sit in on team meetings more than once a year.

I have been working at Opex

    Pros

Amazing products - often with no direct competition
    Excellent service and support
    Extensive customer base
Quite a bit of autonomy to set schedule
    Company is very financially stable

    Cons

Inflexible in dealing with customers, which sometimes creates animosity.
Relatively low pay compared to similar positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ease up on inflexibility - such as allowing employees to use their own mobile phones (offer a stipend instead of insisting that everyone use an old, junky phone OPEX got cheap b/c it's discontinued).

Also, a "good job" here and there can go a long way. I'm not sure why these are in such short supply.

Overall, a great company to work for.
