I have been working at Oprah Winfrey Network full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits were fantastic and the people were great to work with. This is all dependent on the department you are in. My department the VP worked everyone very hard but he was protective of his team and so there were no layoffs as a result. A very agency style department. Pay scale was above average in the industry.

    Cons

No promoting within. Entertainment is a tough industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promoting within would make the guarantee less turnover. Even if its a tittle change, its something. Overall great management though.

I worked at Oprah Winfrey Network full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Very forward thinking, new-age approach, with transcendental meditation and other interesting benefits. Compensation was at or above industry rates for a number of positions, though it varied.

    Cons

Management team was often in disagreement with executive team in long term strategy. Very difficult to discern between duo-leadership teams (of Harpo and Discovery).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen and value the opinions of the middle management team. There were too many very talented individuals who left because their expertise and opinions simply wasn't being valued.

Long hours, strict deadlines, sometimes assignments were not thoroughly thought out and changed periodically

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Collegial, Intimate Atmosphere with a young, happy, passionate workforce always seeking to try new things and be inclusive

    Cons

Creative direction sometimes dictated by things other than creativity and ultimately decisions come from one person.

    Pros

Thought the message we were trying to share in general was a good one. The Marketing department had some strong creative.

    Cons

Los Angeles office felt like the step child. Didn't feel respect from management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand and respect your employees-don't make them feel you mistrust their talent and intentions.

I worked at Oprah Winfrey Network

    Pros

It's Oprah - big stars high profile. Work was interesting and the insider knowledge of how a network works was great.

    Cons

long hours not great money. disheartening when the audience received big prizes and fun trips but for the hours we worked we never got any kudos or recognition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Check your technology senior management. They are working the techies to death to look good but do not look after the team. The high pressure and not insight to the big picture was disappointing.

I worked at Oprah Winfrey Network

    Pros

    - You might get to meet Oprah, this could be a pro or con.
    - Apparently you get your birthday as a day off.

    Cons

Ridiculous hours! Huge amounts of work are given to engineers at the very last minute even though people above you fully realize what's coming down pipe. They will literally hand you a specification and a take out menu and expect you to spend the entire night there and this isn't a once-in-a-while thing but a very, very regular occurrence.

They also do contract-to-hire along with some premise like "It's only for n weeks." It won't be. It will be for as long as they like.

In terms of software, the code base is a complete mess.

    Avoid.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just because it's Oprah doesn't mean your employees will put up with anything.
