Current Employee – been working at OptumHealth full-time

Pros-Communication skills are on top.
-Interviews are painless.
-Down to earth and diverse employees.
-Pay is competitive.
-Hours are extremely fair.
-Many opportunities for growth.

Cons-None to report thus far.
-The only thing I can see that could be a possible issue is that the company is so large that if there are internal problems they won't be taken care of in a timely manner.

Advice to Senior Management-Continue to stay open to your employees and keep things positive like you already do.

Golden Valley, MN

Former Employee – worked at OptumHealth

ProsCompetitive pay, intelligent employees, competent management, work in a interesting field that is constantly changing, constantly expanding through acquisitions, sophisticated financial models

ConsNo respect for a personal calendar - often double and triple booked for meetings, little information sharing across platforms, very unstructured, often multiple people working on the same project at the same time without even knowing it, data integrity

Advice to Senior ManagementIdentify a more effective way to communicate with employees, develop a system to track which projects are being worked on by which employees at any specific time, become more structured as it often was chaotic

ConsLack of communication by senior management. Sr. Mgmnt is all about number and treat their employees as if the are numbers.

Advice to Senior Managementstreamline the communication process and make yourself visiable and interact with employees when on site visits instead of staying in an office

Current Employee – been working at OptumHealth

ProsFlexible work schedule, caring environment supportive. Fosters employee growth

ConsDoes not seem to be alot of communication between senior levels and lower employees. Not much of a career path or opportunity to advance for employees that are being under utilized

Advice to Senior ManagementClinician shortages will lead to the need to utilize your strong performers with vast experience in the healthcare arena. Use them to the fullest. Develop defined growth opportunities and mentoring programs.

Pros- Work life balance: Generous PTO and ability to work remote
- Opportunities for advancement: Large organization with many opportunities to move up
- Employee recognition: Fantastic programs and perks
- Excellent facilities: All the key things you need right here

Cons- Fragmented business units: Mutliple businesses joined together through merger acquisition. Resulted in fragmented data sources, processes and systems. This makes it difficult to navigate the organization and excessive complexity in new initatives.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on standardization and centralization especially of data and systems. There are hundreds of individual data bases that create the opportunity for error and complexity. The best thing you could do is implement a data wharehouse.

ProsStable and growing company providing some job security. Salary is comparable, or slightly higher, to other organizations of the same size. Admirable mission. Employees are able to work from home. Some flexibility in work hours.

ConsTop-heavy in management (my dept alone has 3 levels of management!!!). Poor work-life balance - employees expected to work evenings and weekends regularly, with no "comp time" (My dept has been told they're expected to put in 50 hours a week!). Divisions within the company work in silos, causing some duplicate efforts, as well as confusion and mis-management. Too many managers who shouldn't be! (One recently-hired manager was let go from a previous employer for poor performance.) Health insurance benefits are the worst I've ever seen, and get worse each year. It's getting to the point that I can't afford to work here.

Advice to Senior ManagementClean house of middle-management. Knock down walls between divisions. Work on improving health insurance benefits!
