    I worked at Optus

    Pros

Friendly co workers to work with and a good atmosphere in the store. Pay was OK and hours reasonable also.

    Cons

Difficult Customers and limited support on how to deal with them. Also product knowledge training was informal and ad hoc. When new coverage was available limited briefing was given.

    Pros

Great people who really care about the customer and each other Try hard to provide a work life balance for their people

    Cons

Pay is very average if you move up through the ranks, there is a cap on increases that mean even if you get a promotion you are limited in the pay increase you can get. To get paid well you need to come in from external. Too many changes in direction and strategy A lot of silos across the business

    Advice to Management

Commit to a strategy for more than 6 months at a time so people know what they are aiming for

    Pros

Optus makes an attempt to foster good company culture. Pay is decent and incentives are good, but still struggling to make themselves a deceat company.

    Cons

Backwards, forcing company culture on staff. Do not understand people, and create a negative company culture. Only worried about sales, and force employees to do the same.

    Advice to Management

Try and actually create a dialogue with employees rather than assuming what they want. When they make suggestions actually follow through with them rather than just listen.

    Pros

Great people, culture and campus. Most people will tell the best thing about Optus is the people and culture

    Cons

The senior leadership especially from Singtel have display very little long-sightedness in vision and innovation. Because has not achieved great innovative products in recent years to drive bottom-line growth, they have had to resort to short-term, easy ways to achieve it by cost cutting and reducing head-count. This has generated a lot more politics, bureaucracy especially amongst those are worried about job security and they end up spending more time trying to protect their jobs than creating value for the company

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff and not simply through yearly employee engagement surveys because most staff will tell management what they want to hear. Seek to retain talented people, the people that actually create value for the company and NOT those who simply take other people's work and put a great spin to it.

    Pros

Well resource, good perks and a fun environment. Live bands occasionally and casual wear on campus is good.

    Cons

The role lends itself to dealing with unhappy customers. Not always having an answer can be difficult in a complex environment.

    Advice to Management

Keep communication up with employees. It is a good environment at the moment - please dont reduce staff numbers or offshore any more jobs!

    Pros

Great people in general, awesome campus and facilities. Some impressive leaders. Good investment in training. Development opportunities are there if you manage your own career. Reasonable work life balance, Interesting work, pay and staff benefits pretty good if you perform.

    Cons

The performance assessment criteria for some leaders is very questionable. The credibility of our performance process is undermined by the fact that leaders who don't add any value continue to hold a job. The facts demonstrate they drive talent out of the business and have no engagement of those left.

    Advice to Management

Ask people working under the 'head of' position in HR what it is really like working for that leader and then decide what performance rating they deserve.

    Pros

Working Environment very good Some managers quite good staff discounts quite good Company focused on customer experience Senior leadership team has strategy and goals

    Cons

Pay is 80% less than other companies Too many change programs happening at once Expected to much more with no additional resources or less resources Internal process (procurement, HR,capital accounting) really need to be reviewed as they are a major issue in productivity. Optus very big on outsourcing

    Advice to Management

There are lot of issues that prevent projects / programs from being efficient and achieving results that should be what is expected. Outsourcing is not the answer to everything and is actually one of, if not, the major cause for project delays and additional costs.

    Pros

Worked as contractor for one of their IT projects. Extremely incompetent managers with almost zero project or people management skills. My manager was a constant bully and always reminding me, how much the company was paying me and how they had done me a favour by hiring me. Will never go back again to work for such a company. A truly toxic place to be in.

    Cons

No pros only cons. The only vision of the organisation appears to be on Cost cuttingS

    Advice to Management

To hire people with quality skills. Focussing soley on cost cutting will eventually result in a group of highly competent people heading the show.
