Pros
Working here is ok. The pay isn't bad, generally, and the projects are interesting. Benefits are good, and work/life balance is relatively easy to achieve. There's a lot to be said for a company that makes money.
Cons
However, the bureaucracy and overhead associated with this very hierarchical company is often rather oppressive. It would be nice to see more autonomy at lower levels.
Advice to Senior Management
Valuing and empowering individual contributors and lower-level managers would be worth considering to retain people and get more enthusiasm and energy out of the organization.
Pros
Loose work environment, and good balance between career and personal life
Cons
Promotion is not easy. You need to sell yourself for a promotion
Advice to Senior Management
Legacy Sun executives need to concern product's reliability, not just innovation. It should be done on the front line, not by powerpoint presentation.
Pros
At first I liked the prospects of working for a multinational corporation, now, a few years later I have changed my mind. Although the cafeteria and health benefits make it worthwhile for now.
Cons
The work environment is stifling with little job satisfaction. My colleagues with the same job title earn twice the salary for performing the same duties, many had the same start date and no more experience or knowledge than myself. Other coworkers with the same job title make triple my salary. I have been told by management that there is no room for advancement, promotion, or wage increase within my current department. However, you will not see the same dissatisfaction from my colleagues that hold the same job title of equal performance that earn twice my salary. Oracle management seems content to pay a portion of the department higher salaries to perform the same job that I do.
Advice to Senior Management
Ignoring the needs of the least paid employees (that is to say the employees with greatest ROI - for you headcount managers) and refusing salary increases will only encourage attrition of the most valuable contributors. In an effort to create a fair, symbiotic team oriented environment salaries could be scaled based on duties and responsibilities.
Pros
Large company with significant impact in the industry
Cons
Lots of bureaucracy. It takes a tremendous amount of work to get things done.
Advice to Senior Management
Adopt some of Sun Microsystem's culture of innovation and moving fast.
Pros
Well-respected company. Looks pretty good on a resume.
Cons
Really bad business decisions at the A and B level.
Advice to Senior Management
None for now.
Pros
Pay scale was fare and good benefits
Great location near Boulder, and very nice building with open space and good parking
In many instances ability to work from home few days per week
Great folks that work there from numerous other companies
Cons
Too many business decisions had to be made at the CEO level and he is making the wrong decisions in regards to the Sun hardware business. Major mistakes made costing millions in lost service revenue on very profitable product lines.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep the hardware products alive and continue to invest in the engineering. Keep the services alive with market based support pricing and keep the field engineers that are left to support the customer base.
Pros
This is a very good place to work. Oppurtunity to perform many different areas in computer science and engineering field to produce quality high level products.
Cons
No matter what the coporate obectives and standards you still have to deal with Individuals. Individuals can impact the experience of how people feel about the company.
Advice to Senior Management
Oracle is a great company. Communication and execution on to the employees need to happen and be consistent. The majority of the employees really like the company.
Pros
Oracle is a large and stable company with plenty of cash flow. There's no fear here of going out of business, or being acquired. The company offers versatile hours, supports working from home, and has decent facilities.
Cons
After you reach a certain level, there are very few opportunities for advancement at Oracle. Standard HR practices are virtually non-existent: no performance reviews, no raises, no bonuses, limited ability to move around within the company. There appears to be no interest from management in understanding or addressing employee dissatisfaction.
Advice to Senior Management
Executive management should explain the company strategy to employees; address employee concerns. It may be acceptable to freeze salaries and stop paying bonuses; just explain why. Mr. Ellison appears to be well compensated by the company. Other high-performance employees do not seem to be as lucky.
Pros
Brand name recognition
Excellent sales experience
Excellent benefits
Can make a lot of money if you sell a lot
Some great products
Cons
Have become top heavy
Management doesn't provide a lot of value
Success depends on how lucky you are in getting good accounts
Sales reps are tripping over each other. Too many overlays
Advice to Senior Management
Let reps sell a bigger set of products and reduce conflict
Focus on getting referenceable customers
Pros
Oracle has great benefits, fair compensation, and many tools to help with career advancement. Having Oracle on your resume is nice
Cons
The Company I worked for was acquired by Oracle - and like many big companies that acquire small, innovative, fast moving companies, they allow them to slowly die as they pick out what they want from them. In this case, a once market leading product has been left to stagnate and is now being cannablized by their competition.
Advice to Senior Management
Middle management was\is great. They are still connected to the product, customers, and sales reps. However as you climb up the ladder to Senior Managment who do not have their finger on the pulse of what's happending on the ground - and are only concerned with results but don't know how to acheive them, the culture, morale, and success of the department becomes fragmented.
