I have been working at Oracle full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Telecommuting is fairly common, and company pays for internet connection. Plenty of discounts available. Job security is excellent.

    Cons

The development organization is not all that organized. Schedules seem sometimes arbitrary, although individual pressure depends on your first level management. Insufficient technical leadership and test resources. Predilection for proprietary solutions even where better open-source tools are available.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Technical processes and leadership are important. Cowboy-style development hurts the bottom line. Pay attention to high turnover rates - they indicate that something needs to be fixed.

I have been working at Oracle full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Work from home, flexible, great technology. If you have a good manager it can be a relatively low stress, rewarding job. Decent benefits (for now). Good name on resume.

    Cons

Extremely bureaucratic, lots of administrative busy work that gets in the way of real work.

Negotiate hard up front because you aren't going to get a raise unless you leave and get hired back. Top talent leaving in droves because they don't keep compensation even remotely in line with market. Actually made an across the board pay CUT last year (took away car allowance). Promotions are difficult and political, and only get you a small increase to your potential bonus.

Paid hourly. When I was hired they stated a certain amount of targeted approved over-time built in to the total compensation offer - this is not the case. Overtime is heavily scrutinized by upper management to further reduce compensation/costs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop cost cutting! You are driving away your best employees and are left with the go-along-get-along crowd who are just hiding until retirement. It is having a tangible effect on sales effectiveness and revenue. Myself and others I know are simply sticking it out a little longer before looking for another job if things don't improve.

I have been working at Oracle full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Oracle is a good place to work if you find the right niche.

    Cons

Upward mobility can be challenging. The company tends to hire outside opposed from within to fill Sr. level jobs. Salaries do not appear to at par with the competition, thus many people to leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thin out the ranks -- there are layers upon layers of VPs, SVPs throughout the company. Some are valuable, others not so much.
