I worked at Orange County Register

    Pros

There were some pros including an interesting staff.

    Cons

I think the organization was a bit unorganized.

    Advice to Management

Include more avenues for carers and also update technologically.

    Pros

Not a surprise that the newspaper industry is having trouble and no place has as much heart as the Register or a better track record of innovating to stay ahead of the industry problems.

    Cons

It's a dicey industry and recent changes in management/ownership has reeked havoc on the depth of experience and talent of the staff.

    Advice to Management

Pick a strategy and stick to it

    Pros

Great sales team and lower managers. Strong brand for over 100 years in Southern California. If you are an average employee making average pay your job is probably safe - for a while.

    Cons

layoffs before upper management bothers to ask what you do. If you succeed your are laid off or your goals jump. Upper management turns over every few years, and they bring in all their own 'good old boys'. Shake things up, annoying customers, then move on to next publication. No room for growth, as no rep wants to be a manager (too much stress and short life expectancy.

    Advice to Management

You'll never compete in digital or magazines. Company needs sold to a local who cares about the paper and knows Orange County. Reward reps for hitting goal, not penalize them.

    Pros

My co workers and the entire company has a great community, always a celebrating something and keeping morale up, my job was fun and customers are relatively nice!

    Cons

The decline of the newspaper industry started becoming relevant as time went on, so job security especially now I can't believe is too comforting!

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great and amazing work you guys do for your employees everyday! I loved working here!

  6. Rewarding in part, but frustrating because of repeated management failures, bankruptcy and layoffs.

I have been working at Orange County Register

    Pros

Good design, friendly colleagues, great weather.

    Cons

Takes advantage of job-hungry journalists in a shrinking field; little financial incentive.

    Advice to Management

Make the best possible website while not forgetting forget the print readers.

    Pros

The writers, sales force and all support staff are wonderful, though they work in an industry that's circling the drain: print media. Good benefits, good work environment -- when there are no mass layoffs.

    Cons

First and foremost, the fact that print media is going the way of the encyclopedia and camera film. Secondly, the two leaders who were in charge were incompetent -- but they're gone.

    Advice to Management

When you have layoffs, don't insult us with your corporate speak. When 100 people are laid off, they're not "right-sized." Get it?

    Pros

Well known brand, hard working employees with a mix of of good managers.

    Cons

Upper management unfocused, out of touch with product, employees and customers.

    Advice to Management

Broaden product to a variety of different media, understand the customers and how they want to get the product and listen to employees who are producing the product.

    Pros

Very good journalists and editors; willingness to take on young reporters and give them big stories.

    Cons

Management has been rocky, which has led to buyouts and layoffs – thus, many older pros have left; little chance for advancement so many of the good young reporters actively job hunting.

    Advice to Management

Stabilize the business by focusing on what is working best; make an effort to keep the remaining staff happy.

    Pros

I work with a great bunch of hardworking people & my manager is so nice & helpful

    Cons

Upper management is out of touch! Also The CEO can't be very bright. All the layoffs & elimination of publications are so financially irresponsible!

    Advice to Management

Even though we just made some changes. I don't thin they are enough. The employees need to be appreciated much more.
