I worked at Orange County Register full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to move around, learn from great people, and work on both daily and weekly newspapers.

    Cons

Newspaper businesses aren't doing great, that's no secret, and the Register is no exception, despite the current owner's ambitious plans.

initially promising, however the promise did not lead to a satisfying experience

I worked at Orange County Register as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

There are talented people who want to do a good job working for one of the few remaining large newspaper organizations in Southern CA.

    Cons

Contractors' payments are delayed, delayed delayed, and you have to fight to get paid, not something a freelancer usually has the luxury to do. Due to the constantly shifting issues with the company and itsfinancial instability, if you are not a full-time employee it is very difficult to get clear and timely direction. People seem to be more pre-occupied with preserving their own jobs.

    Pros

Chance to do innovative work. Good relationship with co-workers and immediate supervisors.

    Cons

Now chaotic and veering from strategy to strategy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Slow down and think it through.

    Pros

    Great coworkers, company name recognition.

    Cons

Massive pressure from upper management to bring in revenue
Monthly sales goals are way out of reach
    Company is disorganized and chaotic
Multiple layoffs - here now but could be gone tomorrow

The Register was a wonderful place to work as a journalist, but I worry about the workplace now that many have left.

    Pros

The people who work in the newsroom are wonderful. There's a real sense of family among the journalists, and no lack of work.

    Cons

Training was largely dependent on informal mentorship by senior journalists, many of whom have left. With a greatly reduced staff, it is unlikely that there will be much opportunity to growth. I believe there were 5 paid holidays per year, along with 3 personal days and

    Pros

Jobs in print journalism are hard to find.

    Cons

While interesting to have an entrepreneur as owner, his recklessness and complete ignorance of the news industry made Kushner's venture nothing but an expensive hobby for him and sad fate for the professionals in his employ.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Game over. Go back to Boston.

I worked at Orange County Register full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

It's always been the alternative to the Old Gray Lady, The Los Angeles Times. Thinner management structure, more willingness to give reporters rope to tie up the story - or hang themselves for wasting time.

    Cons

A series of out-of-town owners have sucked all the life out of the place. The latest version is out of touch with reality, with a dictator-type owner who won't listen to anyone else and an editor who is cryptic or unhinged - depending on when you see him and IF you can even find him.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shut it down and sell it

I worked at Orange County Register full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The best reasons were learning from colleagues and becoming close to them almost like family. We always enjoyed celebrating each others success.

    Cons

Nobody wants to advertise in a newspaper but management were still stuck in the 1980's. It's a shame to say you'll perform much better learning tips and tricks from the seniored reps. They know how to run a sales floor much much better. The director promotes fear in each of the sales reps and thinks its the way to success.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great place to work until you decided to form a "clique" of old friends that has the team in negatives compared to last year.

I worked at Orange County Register

    Pros

The people in the field are all willing to support you. Great team work and great people. Very good money if you have the right accounts/territory

    Cons

Internal politics are very tough and can be career limiting if you are on the wrong side. Difficult and time consuming to learn the internal network.

I worked at Orange County Register as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

If you're starting out as a journalist and can't find any work elsewhere then this might be your only choice other than that I can't think of any other pros.

    Cons

Lack of opportunity for advancement, mind numbing work for menial pay, upper management doesn't know what the hell they're doing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be attentive to your employees whether they are freelancers or part of the staff. It sometimes took weeks before an editor got back to me.
