For a telco, the lack of internal communication is startling

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
South San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Orange Labs

ProsA pretty good number PTOs after one year of working here.
Overall benefits are decent.
Strict office hours makes it ok to leave early. (5.30pm)
The company has money, so some can find budget to do stuff.
Smart people.

ConsYou're not working on any real products and you don't have any real customers.
The overall vision and goal for the lab is not made clear by management.
A lot of internal politics, between here and the French offices, as well as between groups here too, which is scary.
Projects actually survive depending on what management likes but also who is involved in the US and in France.
Strict office hours. (can be a constraint)
Bonus system is opaque and convoluted. (your actual performance doesn't actually influence your bonus much compared to seniority and other mysterious things that management and HR decide)
It seems that a lot of people have been here a long long time and are just content with the situation, knowing how to navigate the internals of the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmployees like independence but some vision is necessary, especially when there are no products to work on directly and no customers to talk to.

Multidisciplinary but lack of vision for business development

Senior Software Analyst (Former Employee)
Grenoble (France)

I worked at Orange Labs full-time for more than 3 years

ProsHeterogeneous integration of products
Opportunities for employee development
Care for employees and benefits

ConsAlthough it is meant for innovations, but there is very little r&d is going on. Mostly managers end up in fixing the figures of performance and young developers have little knowledge how their products will eventually be utilised.

Great workplace atmosphere

R&D Engineer Intern (Former Employee)
Meylan, Rhone-Alpes (France)

I worked at Orange Labs full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat work environment
Successful company, leader in telecommunications segment
Good salaries for French standard
Great research labs

ConsVery institutionalized company, with pretty high hierarchical stack

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on efficiency of available staff. The investment in laboratory resources, work environment, work inventories, employee training, etc. all are well executed. The main concern is project planning, goal definition, meeting target expectations and schedule - the fluctuation in few projects I was exposed to express a lack of commitment from some parts in making execution more efficient.
