    Pros

Great place to work. I love the fact that they work around your life, and other responsibilities, you don't work around theirs. All they ask is that you meet them half way, and work with them.

    Cons

I don't have anything negative to say about Orchard Supply Hardware

    Advice to Management

Great job!! Keep up the good work!!

    Pros

Great focus on customer service. All programs and company improvements are to improve customer service.

    Cons

No structured training for managers to move up in position. Too focused on bringing in new managers from outside making the current in house candidates discouraged.

    Advice to Management

Grow your internal candidates with an individually structured plan. Don't expect the store managers to handle this or put it on the candidate to grow themselves. District and Regional people need to take ownership of the talent build the bench.

  3. Can be enjoyable, but bad outweighs the good.

    Pros

As long as you show some initiative, there are many opportunities to work in different departments. This gives you a chance to find a place you really like, as well as become a more diverse (and more valuable) employee.

    Cons

On the other hand, a vast majority of employees don't care about the store. Department managers are usually enjoyable to work with, but regular associates are often apathetic.

There are also many changes in management. I worked as an associate for 2 years. None of the managers I started with were there when I left. And these weren't always one for one changes. There were often 2-3 changes per assistant manager position.

    Advice to Management

1.Work on keeping your people happy.

2.Have a more standardized associate training system so kids off the registers know how to help customers on the sales floor.

    Pros

Great place to Hone Customer Service skills

    Cons

Poorly compensated, few benefits, minimal hours. Would rather hire in a bunch of part timers than allow for full time

    Advice to Management

Treat the employees a people with families. It's very hard when can't budget because of sporadic scheduling

    Pros

The people working at HQ are awesome yet not allowed to friendly. Any kindness between associates is seen as a threat to upper Management

    Cons

compensation, work enviroment, recruiting team- mean spirited

    Advice to Management

get rid of Dir. of Recruiting- he is awful and places monetary bets on how long an employee will last.

    Pros

Pros: you get to learn about home improvement and the people there are nice. And the hours are flexible. Good first job for people in school.

    Cons

Like any retail job, customers play a big role in you having a good day or a bad day. The managers would also get transferred a lot so sometimes that led to inconsistencies with leadership.

    Pros

Dedicated and passionate associates, many of which are long term. Beautiful new store format which was created and developed by a leader who is no longer with the company.

    Cons

Lowes, as predicted by many after purchasing Orchard, is already ruining this 80+ year old company that has been a California staple for generations. The best of Orchards upper level and field management was let go by the new President of Orchard (A Lowes Guy). Just another example of why Home Depot has been kicking Lowes behind for over 30 years......

    Advice to Management

Take a look in the mirror..... "The name on the front of the jersey is a hell of a lot more important than the name on the back"! The sooner you figure this out the better.
