Pros
Deep Tri-Met discount, autonomy while on the job, great views!
Cons
unions = merit based work gets trumped by seniority. I love public transit, but if you want to drive and park your car at work, this isn't the place.
Advice to Senior Management
I know it is hard to run a hospital like a business, but the unions are not doing you any favors when it comes to the retail branches of OHSU.
Pros
Pay and benefits are better than most companies in oregon
Cons
It is so big that some employees can get lost
Advice to Senior Management
be more personable
Pros
Professional environment; smart people who have a mission that advances well being of all Oregonians
Cons
Transportation, parking are difficult. I don't like taking the bus and at times feel isolated up on the hill.
Advice to Senior Management
Communicate!
Pros
Great program director and associate dean who are always available to students;
Great location - public transportation is readily available;
A more comprehensive set of courses for students
Cons
Lack of internal collaborations;
Journal clubs are not student-oriented;
No student career center;
Advice to Senior Management
Encourage internal communications and collaborations - there are a lot of labs that will produce great work as a team.
Pros
Excellent benefit package if you can actually utilize vacation days
Cons
Low pay for research assistant
Advice to Senior Management
Respect vacation benefit and allow usage.
Pros
Very complex work environment, which makes learning more interesting than at a smaller healthcare organization; wonderful people; very smart senior leaders; positive work environment
Cons
A lot of information does not trickle down to lower level employees or front line staff--senior leaders need to be more transparent and visible; parking is expensive, IF you can get a spot on the hill at all!
Pros
Worked at OHSU Foundation. Good salary. Great benefits. If you have a good mgr, can be great place to work. OHSU's mission is def inspiring. Raising money for important causes and smart scientists is rewarding. Doernbecher mission is amazing. Location on Marquam (or downtown office) nice, easy to get to. Nice downtown office, remodeled recently.
Cons
HR is a joke -- they reward non-performers and create busy work for all. There are managers that everyone (including senior leaders and even HR) knows are bad at managing people, but they do nothing and even promote. Most employees don't go to HR anymore because we remember a few people who have been burned from going to them.
Biggest weakness is sr leadership.....lots of secrecy and annual reorgs. Closed door meetings and HR in the mix means "something is up," common phrase uttered by the cube class. Hahaha!! HR-senior management in cahoots with lots of crazy reorgs that create increasing levels of middle management. Some admins have 5 or 6 bosses -- alot for a place with 100 employees.
Doernbecher is a crazy storm. Turnover there is outrageous, yet leadership problems persist. Everyone knows about it too.
Advice to Senior Management
Rethink HR's function. Should HR be defending management or empowering employees? It's clear whats been chosen.
Less talking about change and more making change.
Enough with the consultant crutch. Don't know what to do? Let's pay $50,000 to consultants! Waste of what is ultimately donor money.
Pros
great community.
if you are lucky, like I am, you will have a great manager.
Cons
politics as usual
parking sucks
Christmas party sucks
Advice to Senior Management
list to your employees. you are almost bad as the politicians.
Pros
Great patients, some of the coworkers are wonderful, some exciting medical research
Cons
Limited ability to navigate the multiple systems at detriment of the patient. Siloed EHR programs.
Advice to Senior Management
Larger effort to protect back during floor work that includes a no-lift policy that goes beyond just vocalization.
Pros
good benefits, client population, good coworkers
Cons
Some management are entrenched and cannot expand beyond their narrow views, so at time felt the floor felt marginalized. The greatest con was the lateral violence that occurred for new nurses to start and work in the department. Older nurses were brutal. It was a horrible start and stayed that way for about 2 years.
Advice to Senior Management
Work assimilating new nurses in an environment that promotes transparency and allow sharing without fear of retribution.
