Cons
  • The only real con I'd suppose is that I couldn't stay here forever, but they need room for more graduate students (in 6 reviews)

  • Did a lot of good work for low pay, its unfortunate considering how much money my research brought in for the school how little pay I received (in 3 reviews)

I worked at Oregon State University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Work around schedule, understanding managers, easy to get time off, paid above minimum wage. I worked at Academic Success Center and it was a great job for me to really gain transferable skills.

    Cons

No room for growth; once you're not a student anymore you can't work there.

I worked at Oregon State University

    Pros

Combination of study and work. Being a GRA/GTA allowed me to complete my graduate studies without incurring student debt and making a little money on the side. Workload was not very demanding.

    Cons

Renewal of assistantships can not be guaranteed. Summer tuition is not covered with a GRA/GTA position.

More worried about money than students

I worked at Oregon State University as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    Great benefits
    Okay Pay

I grew as a person during this job. I learned more about what I wanted and gained a lifetime of experience.

    Cons

    Bad organization
Most of senior management is well taken care of. Anyone below that is expendable.
Need to focus more on offering more for students.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Interact with your employees and get to know them better.

I worked at Oregon State University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Research can be interesting, if you are on a good project. Campus is nice and corvallis is a reasonable affordable place to live, although costs are increasing.

    Cons

Graduate research assistants are at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to university employees. If the PI is not running an efficient and highly productive laboratory you may get stuck as a poorly compensated graduate student for much longer than you expected. In the life sciences, the post graduate career outlook is quite poor and is getting worse (at least according to the NSF and personal experience).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve programs and training opportunities to help graduate students better transition into the job market.

Former Employee - GTA in Corvallis, OR

I worked at Oregon State University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent pay and hours. Work load will highly depend on the class or instructor that you support. Weekly hours can range from 4 to 20 and are often great when midterms are occurring.

    Cons

Only about 700 dollars a month so you will mostly likely need additional financial support. Some GTA's will do less work than you and still get paid the same.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nothing much to say, more pay perhaps?

I have been working at Oregon State University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

0.4FTE means that you are not required to work full time. Hard work is only mandatory depending on your adviser. Work-life balance is self motivated. There is a Rec Center. Culture is dependent on your fellow researchers. It is academia, not business

    Cons

There is no advancement opportunities. You can acquire fellowships, but they will only offset your current salary.

Former Employee - Graduate Research Assistant in Corvallis, OR

I worked at Oregon State University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good facility and staff. Smooth communication within lab mates and group members. Faculties are highly solid technically and willing to provide advisory support. Lab equipment is well organized and maintained.

    Cons

Pay is standard among universities no matter how much effort you put into your research. But this is understandable since this is research institute rather than company after all.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leadership should talk more often to each GRA student/employee in person.
