I worked at Organic Valley as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

They truly believe in their mission of humane treatment of animals along with a healthy food supply.

Great work-life-balance. They are driven to work hard but still recognize the need to decompress, which is great.

They will spend time and money to help train you towards relevant certifications as well.

Great discount on organic valley food along with an order booklet for buying organic products in bulk from a food club.

Highly revere wellness. They have a gym and training classes.

Tons of room to move in the company. They have an amazing record of high growth that they strive to retain their talent by giving them tons of room to grow.

    Cons

Low pay. This is a con but when you see how the company's revenue is reinvested into itself you understand why this is the case. Management believes in a strong middle class.

Location. The company has trouble retaining talent primarily due to this. They have a van pool that you can very cheaply join which will save you gas if you commute from a nearby area, however.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the hard work.

I have been working at Organic Valley full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

A unique organization with a mission to promote regional farm diversity and economic stability by marketing and selling certified organic products. Some nice perks like a gym, cafeteria and they feed you all day long with their wonderful products. Fair-trade Organic Coffee. Casual dress. Casual atmosphere. Nice newly updated HQ with some pretty neat conference rooms. Pioneers in the industry.

    Cons

Extremely complex organizational structure which creates a reactionary business model. Very low pay for the industry. Poor benefits like Health Insurance and Retirement. High-level leadership lacks business acumen, accountability and is not modeling the way. Some major ethical issues. Lack of policies and not a data driven organization. Remote location. Nepotism. Many managers promoted internally and past their level of competence. Does not value higher education nor pay employees more for a B.A. or Masters degree. Truly is a "social experiment" and the business is playing catch-up after 25 years of rapid growth - some major issues have erupted after the HQ fire in 2013.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider offering your employees more - compensation and benefits. Perks only go so far. Remove poor performers - you have lots of clean-up to do within the organization. You are pioneers in this industry and should model the way as such - remember that there are people who look up to you and you are inspiring actions and role models for your employees and the industry.

Current Employee - Farmer in Green Bay, WI

I have been working at Organic Valley full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Employees care about their work and are very respectful and appreciative to the farmers.

    Cons

Management sets the pay price and is out of touch with the farmers. Employees consistently get a pay raise or profit sharing every year while farmers have to fight for every raise they get and that comes less than every year, even 2 years or more. Senior management receives annual bonuses of $ 25,000 on up, based on the co-ops performance, giving him encouragement to keep farmer pay price low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop thinking of yourself and help the farmer with a sustainable pay price.

I have been working at Organic Valley full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Relaxed environment, casual dress code (seriously- flip flops are completely appropriate attire), nice coworkers, decent perks. Company has a strong moral view and lives the mission.

    Cons

Well below average salaries- the pay structure is not at all transparent so it's difficult to know what your earning potential is. Nepotism is prevalent and definitely plays a role in who is hired/promoted. Very rural location, I commute an hour each way to live in a nearby, larger city.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open regional offices and pay employees a fair salary if you hope to continue attracting, and keeping, talented employees.

    Cons

The rural location along with the low profit goals yield below-average compensation.

I have been working at Organic Valley full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Casual attire, good training and benefits, opportunity for advancement, remote work available. Internship opportunities. You can go on farm tours! It's very satisfying to know that what you do help keep families on their farms.

    Cons

Sometimes things are a little too loose especially as the company grows, and top management appears at times to be out of touch with front line staff. There are very few entry level positions except in the warehouse.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Add staff coaching requirements to Supervisor/Manager review process

Former Employee - Inventory Associate in La Farge, WI

I worked at Organic Valley full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Discounts on products, mostly good co-workers

    Cons

Hours, management, pay, focused more on business need then remembering people have lives outside of work. People promoted and then quit working and are on facebook all day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more flexible with hours. Business need isn't the most important thing. Family comes first. Turn off facebook.
