    Pros

Absolutely love the kids, and the environment, good atmosphere. House managers are great and very helpful!

    Cons

Education managers talks down on people who's below them. Very low pay for the stress & work load! An excuse as to why we're not getting any raises is "we're nonprofit, we're on a strict budget." Then have all staff meetings explaining how much money we've made in such a short period of time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have to start somewhere, just because I'm not where you are doesn't mean I'm beneath you or that you can talk to me however.

I worked at Orlando Science Center as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

You do get passes after being there for 100 hours

    Cons

The office space is rather noisy, it was above the Clifford exhibit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide the interns with some responsibility, not just simple data entry.

    Pros

If you really work the political system ( go out and drink with the exec's weekly) can be a cushy job

    Cons

Really low pay, very disorganized. Hides behind "we're nonprofit" constantly. Then has all staff meeting explaining how much money is coming in.

I have been working at Orlando Science Center part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

There is a lot to do in terms of work so you are always busy (which I enjoy). A lot of the managers I deal with are very nice and helpful but a select few come across as very callous.
i work in the summer camp which is of course, super busy, but it's very well planned and operates smoothly considering the number of kids they're dealing with.

    Cons

For the amount of stress on the job, the pay is REALLY low. I know they are non-profit but I've made a lot more at other non-profits doing a lot less. Management is VERY strict on time and resources. I barely get a chance to eat in my 30 minute break. When you're working around 100s of kids, breaks are VERY important!! Again, the stress levels really build up during a full day and you're not getting paid a lot so it gets very difficult considering all those factors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Add in a few 15 minute breaks for your summer camp employees. There is plenty of staff to go around and the teachers and counselors could use that short break since it gets so stressful. A few managers act very rude toward lowers employees. In training, you learn hundreds of the rules and you are bound to forget SOMETHING. Being talked down to over something small because you'd forgotten one time is definitely not encouraging -- especially when it does not effect anyone else.

I have been working at Orlando Science Center

    Pros

This is not a great place to work in the conventional sense, but it's one of the most rewarding jobs I've ever had. The people are great, the work is important and knowing you had an impact on young people is very powerful. There's a great team spirit here and freedom to do the job you were hired to do.

    Cons

The pay isn't that great since it's a non-profit and we're behind the curve in some things. The organizations is still finding it's way in a lot of areas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to continue to look ahead and not simply operate in the moment. There should be more confidence in our capabilities and our place in the community.

I have been working at Orlando Science Center full-time

    Pros

Great flexibility with full time work schedule, comp time offered depending on your department. Great senior management and atmosphere.

    Cons

full time salaries not competitive with other nonprofits in central Florida, and benefits are pretty terrible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

balance the poor pay scale with better benefits and/or do an analysis of comparable positions and salaries in the area and pay employees what they are worth to avoid turnover for entry level positions

I worked at Orlando Science Center full-time

    Pros

    - Met a lot of wonderful people
    - Able to help educate the general public
    - Generally never bored
    - Flexible schedule
    - Opportunities for advancement if you work hard

    Cons

    - Some of the managers need to go. They have been there for years and seem burnt out/don't seem to care anymore.
    - Management can play favorites, which is highly frustrating if you aren't one.
    - Pay could be better for non-management positions
    - The Science center needed a lot of updates during the time I worked there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on customer service, updating the common areas and making the place feel more uniform. Stop playing favorites. Get rid of some of your managers or at the very least have better control over them so they don't treat their department employees like trash.
