I worked at Orrick full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Most of the people are great, very collegial & creative. Always a lot of growth, change, evolution which allows for much professional growth & exposure to various leaders.

    Cons

Constantly shifting priorities/expectations, some of the people are not so great, and at times too many decision-makers which leads to frustration & inefficiency (also too many egos!).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clear reporting relationships, limit the "dotted lines"

  2.

Horrible firm with no values. Uses associates for all they are worth and then doesn't support them.

    Pros

Decent pay and good food in cafeteria.

I worked at Orrick full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Now, more of a sweatshop, ill-managed, bottom-line-only-matters place to work.

    Cons

You're a resource to achieve one strategic goal which is to make the partners rich. Once you've achieved your usefulness, you're cast aside with yesterday's garbage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring back the middle managers who cared about what they were doing and wanted to see Orrick succeed as a direct correlation with their subordinates success.

I have been working at Orrick full-time

    Pros

The benefits are good, and the work/life balance is excellent.

    Cons

It might be specific to my department, but there have been multiple breakdowns in communication and inability to correct workplace issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

All parts of a conflict are important.

Work life balance fluctuates with the workload at the firm.

I have been working at Orrick full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Firm is fairly prestigious, old school, very established, great pay and fairly good benefits.

    Cons

Very bureaucratic. Firm has associates on regular track, and alternative work arrangements, career associates, etc., which don't necessarily mean better hours, but may mean lesser pay.

I have been working at Orrick full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fun, energetic people, great clients, beautiful offices.

    Cons

Under "nice" veneer is a very sharp-elbowed firm where the financial and professional rewards are reaped by powerful rainmakers and their handpicked worker bees.

  9.

I have been working at Orrick full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The firm, unlike most law firms, has an entrepreneurial spirt that drives innovation. The firm is in constant motion, finding new ways to provide more creative ways to assist clients.

    Cons

The cons are the constant motion doesn't allow for any processes. People tend to miscommunicate and step on one another's toes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Rethink formal processes

    Pros

I worked for Orrick for several years as an attorney. The staff and other attorneys are generally good to work with and friendly. Great people, supportive environment.

    Cons

The work flow can be sporadic. Some of the partners are stand offish. Managment is not always as transparent as it appears.

I have been working at Orrick part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The people. The attorneys and staff at Orrick are very smart, dedicated, care about their work, and care about one another. There are no "yellers" here. Everyone works well together. You feel like you are a well respected and needed part of a team.

    Cons

The bonus structure leaves too much discretion in the hands of partners who have no time to adequately evaluate your work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Change the bonus structure.
