I have been working at Osmose Utilities

The worst thing is the amount of outside hard labor. It is very difficult to work if you are not in shape

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

The money. Benefits. Travel. Hire your own crew.

    Cons

Away from family for long periods of time. Supervisors talk behind your back to Operations manager. Easily separated from company for anything minor. Constantly being told you will be fired. No support from management. If supervisor don't like you or you complain to much they separate you. Company could save money on hotels and gas if management places crew nearer to home. Currently you can go 2 hrs away from home and another crew works in backyard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember who pays the bills. Spend millions on training, hotels and gas. When Better Crew Management Could Save AND Have A Better Work Force Retention

I worked at Osmose Utilities full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Opportunity. If you are a younger person with absolutely no experience in the industry, Osmose may very well be a great place to work. Be prepared to travel. Go in with eyes wide open, trust nothing that isn't in writing.

    Cons

From a seasoned utility manager scope, Osmose is poorly structured. Communication is nonexistent. Safety practices are picked and chosen between. There is no consistency. Labor pool is shallow and entitled. It appears the Foreman choose crew members from friends, cousins, and neighbors who need a job. IF you have previous line construction experience, the disorganization is embarrassing. A real shame, because they have a strong market stake, nice equipment and the potential to be one of the better companies in the vast utility industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get organized. Communicate. Realize and understand just how complacent your employees are. Hold people accountable. Adopt means of testing to find out the competency of your employees in the field. In the Southeast, you are working under a "good-ole boy" system. It's crystal clear. You have several employees that need to take a urinalysis. You have unsupervised personnel who are performing sub-par work. Start doing QC. The reason you will never perform for the largest provider in your home state is the lack of consistency, the lack of skilled personnel, and the complacency found in your management team. Osmose has the potential to be awesome, but if mediocre (at best) is okay by you, keep going in the direction you are going. I can guarantee that eventually the substandard performance will be recognized by your customer.

I have been working at Osmose Utilities

    Pros

The company is heavily focused on safety, especially for its many outside employees.

    Cons

The company's financials are a complete mystery, including to the Finance team

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get the team out of the ivory turret in the south and get them out to see their employees and their customers. Decisions are made in a vacuum in an overly centralized manner.

I have been working at Osmose Utilities

    Pros

travel and see things you would normally not see, like the trashy back yards of people in the city, hoping fences, and the dirt piles you leave after your crew digs them

    Cons

to much travel, shared rooms, promises unmet, prepare to work uncompensated. poor benefits package, prepare to be jerked around by management and be exposed to some nasty chemicals

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

be upfront to employees about what they get paid before you hire them at one rate, and then give them another during "training"
