    Customer Service Gestapo

Former Employee - Customer Service in Somerset, NJ
Former Employee - Customer Service in Somerset, NJ

    I worked at Oticon full-time

    Pros

Most of the employees are pleasant and friendly. The pay is average. The customer service department has opportunities to get a bonus for employee of the month award. The other departments are run better.

    Cons

Management runs customer service like a gestapo. It is micromanaged, and the manager is always watching to see if someone is talking about her (even in the ladies room hidden in a stall). If she finds out, she fires you. If you decide to leave the company and give 2 weeks notice, they will escort you right out without waiting 2 weeks. The turnover is horrendous! The employees are constantly having to train new people in addition to regular duties. Only 35 minute lunch and ONE 15 minute break(this was upgraded from 30 minute lunch and one 10 minute break!)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop micromanaging. Be nice to all your employees, not just the ones you like. Don't be so quick to fire people. If the turnover wasn't so bad, the employees would be able to do their job instead of constantly training. CHANGE the customer service manager!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be consistent with praise or punishment. Listen to employees. They have great ideas.

Current Employee - Computer/Electrical Engineer in Copenhagen (Denmark)

I have been working at Oticon

    Pros

    - High level of individual responsibility.
    - Flat organization.
    - Trust in the individual.
    - Peers have high technical skills.

    Cons

    * Personal development/education not encouraged (except in your own time of course).
    * Limited career opportunities within the organization.
    * Tendency to disregard proven solutions just because they are complex.
    * Management restructuring every 8-10 months (well, they need something to do).
    * Innovation not rewarded/encouraged.

It's a shame that a company once renowned for its innovation, organizational structure and high level of individual responsibility has turned to the most destructive solution(s) for handling its growth: control, rules, control, rules

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More control and structure in your daily work does not equal
    a) motivated employees
    b) better work results from employees
