Small enough to know you, almost large enough to serve you.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsAcademic administration is top notch. Faculty are amazing, mostly working pros. Most of the students are terrific too.

    ConsFacilities are really tight.

    A wonderful place to work

ProsOtis provides a great opportunity to work in a creative environment with talented and committed people -- students, faculty, administration, and leadership.

ConsAs a smaller institution Otis has limited financial resources. However, the College's can-do culture enables it to do more with less.

    Great benefits!

    Accountant (Current Employee)

Pros17 paid holidays. Vacation time. 2 personal days a year. Free health insurance (Med, Dental, Vision). Nice retirement plan.

ConsDue to low economic period, we haven't had a raise in salary for 3 years, but we have received stipends to compensate.

Brilliant Opportunity to work with talented artists of all ages.

    Instructor (Current Employee)
    Marina del Rey, CA

ProsInstructors have the freedom to encourage students with varying interests, previous art training/education, so each student gets creative support.

ConsOne thing that would be really nice is if courses could run about six weeks longer in order to get work time.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think visiting professionals, giving panel discussions and/or in-service visits to various
classrooms would be a "Wow" factor at Otis. We do have some great artists teaching at Otis already but wouldn't it be great to have visits from great artists who are visiting Ca?

Get the Most out of this Experience.

    Assistant (Former Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

ProsA wealth of knowledge at bay, so attend private free events, network and utilize available resources such as their amazing library and website's reference tools. Friendly, brilliant, talented and special student and professional minds.

ConsManagement creates super high expectations that are more or less not to be achieved. Student work is a direct reflect of their engagement in their course and available guidelines. Some student work is farmed out last minute due to students' lack there of preparation. Course work could be perked up / modernized as relevant to student and industry interest / standards. Make sure to check your hours against paycheck. Payroll can get confused and underpay.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease set expectations of employees upfront as to hours available for the work week and who the employee will be working with, versus the new employee having to coordinate with Professors whom they've never met to find out they have less hours available to work. Part-time employees put in good faith and energy to this school and should be eligible for partial benefits or a pay-in.

Otis; small town feel, innovative arts environment.

    Director (Current Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

ProsWorking in an innovative educational arts environment with creative people. Otis has a competitive benefits package with excellent paid leave for holidays due to the academic schedule. The small school environment means you will know everyone in each department which results in an extended family feel in the workplace.

ConsSmall endowment means big projects are not easy to fund. Higher education salaries tend to be lower than corporate and there is not a lot of upward mobility due to the shallow hierarchical structure.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake advantage of the expertise of all the management not just from the few core positions. There is a lot of specialized knowledge to pull from at Otis.

Great creative environment but leadership sends mixed messages at times.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsCreative and talented faculty who are a lot of fun, some exceptionally brilliant students . Amazing office staff ! Great location, SUMMERS OFF !!!!!

Many sweet , hardworking, dedicated students .

ConsWorkload, expectations , responsibilities seem to increase every year for both teachers and students. Bar is set impossibly high in regard to student design and illustration. Only gifted few can achieve this level of work without an inordinate amount of teacher " corrections" (a euphemism for teachers basically redoing student work to meet standards of excellence that are impossible for most ) . Leadership gives mixed messages often .

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on students achieving their own personal best . Do not expect student work to look as good, actually much better , than majority of industry designers. Recognize and nurture different approaches to design problem solving. Foster individuality rather than homogeneity !
