I have been working at Otis R Bowen Center For Human Services full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great co-workers, great mission! I had the ability to work in different positions and with different populations which made the job interesting.

    Cons

High rate of turnover and emotionally demanding job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review salaries for direct care staff - a college degree is required for these positions but the pay isn't enough to begin paying back student loans!

Underpaid, raises infrequent, lack of management, different rules for different people, no team work, no communication!

I have been working at Otis R Bowen Center For Human Services full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It is rewarding to help clients (that actually want help), positive feedback from clients and occasionally from management. Training is paid for (or reimbursed) if you pursue it, good benefits, difficult to get fired!

    Cons

Lack of leadership, high turnover of employees, raises are seldom, yearly bonuses but they equal out to like .05 per hour., Health insurance benefits are high if you have to cover a family, expectations are high for what you get paid.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Team management is only effective if supervisors participate as team players! Management is not supposed to share with other employees what discipline is going to happen or did happen to co-workers (ex. others knowing an employee is going to get fired before that employee is told).

Great company policies and atmosphere, no room for movement or pay increase.

I have been working at Otis R Bowen Center For Human Services full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Employees are generally supportive of each other and work as a team. Supervisors have empathy and are approachable. The policies and the actual work you do with the company really makes a difference in peoples' lives, and that can make a big difference once in a while.

    Cons

Benefits are good but the cost keeps increasing yearly, and salary does not. No policy for regular pay increases for quality performance, bonuses have been reduced/removed. Work loads have increased and expectations of senior management are getting more difficult to obtain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company needs to start offering pay comparable to other companies or it will become more and more difficult to retain good employees. It is going to start to cost more to train new hires than to keep the good people in the first place.

Awful place to work! Former RSP

I worked at Otis R Bowen Center For Human Services

    Pros

Some coworkers were supportive. Genuine sense of accomplishment after helping client succeed with treatment plan goal.

    Cons

Working as an RSP was by far the worst experience of my life. Management was unsupportive and would almost always take the side of the client complaining over myself. This job was a joke from a clinical point of view. All management cares about is whether or not you meet service hours. I was denied overtime on several occasions and forced to eat hours to make productivity. I was publicly called out for errors in front of other staff members on multiple occasions. Expect micromanagement in all the wrong ways.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a closer look at some of your office management. Office morale was horrible among RSPs at my office!

    Clinical

    Pros

Co-workers and middle managers , clinical staff , therapist and psychiatrist are exceptional . They go way beyond the call of duty. They are the mortar that keeps this place still standing.

    Cons

Unfortunately , it's corporate management with the pathology . As it's this corporate "greed " that took the vision of our great Governor and tarnished his name; brand and image.
Corporate has turned their backs on those that built this institution. Their clients are looked at as just billable units. And nothing more.
The paradigm shift has started ...employees leaving in herds. As they are the ones with the ethics and can take it no more.
This is not a good place to work. It's not about the money , nor advancement. It's about business ethics ...: it doesn't exist here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company should RE-tool from the top down. The dinosaurs must go...I don't believe that they have heard that their management style is extinct.
Otis was a good man. It's a shame how management has prostituted his name in the name of "profits".... Or what the non -profits call surplus.
Ask them what happens to this Indiana taxpayers money ... ;"The Surplus"

    Pros

None besides it (sort of) paid my bills for the time being.

    Cons

Terrible management, long hours, and you are always being stretched past what you are being paid. No room for growth, no reason to feel motivated to work hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train your employees better. Care about your employees, not just the clients you serve. Why you lose so many people so quickly.

I have been working at Otis R Bowen Center For Human Services full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Somewhat autonomous position, however gov't intervention is decreasing autonomy and making maximizing billing penultimate priority.

    Cons

Low compensation; work hours do not match 40 hr. work week. Usually give away 6 - 7 hours a week in free work due to restrictions on billing vs. hours of hourly pay allowed per week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not over react when you have a glut of clients who haven't yet received due to receiving many request for services at same time for many clients. You tend to over hire, then perhaps 20% of clients do not work out, leaving you with staff fighting for remaining clients and administration having to make perhaps some unrealistic requests from staff to cover services for remaining 'valid clients'.
