I worked at Ottawa-Carleton District School Board as a contractor for more than 3 yearsPros
Plenty of potential for growth through professional development days, workshops, training, mentoring, etc.
Friendly coworkers, for the most part, who were more than willing to help new teachers.Cons
It is very difficult to obtain a permanent position.
Administration changes every 3-5 years.Advice to ManagementAdvice
There needs to be new ways of attracting and keeping good teachers, preventing them from leaving due to lack of permanent work.
Maternity leave benefits should be provided to occasional teachers (assuming they work full-time hours).Neutral OutlookApproves of CEO
I have been working at Ottawa-Carleton District School BoardPros
Good benefits, salary, and summers off.Cons
Poor inservice training, student/classroom based funding, poor support for extra-curriculars, little incentive for teachers to go above and beyond the call, insufficient time for planning and evaluation.Advice to ManagementAdvice
Look for ways to reward those that go above and beyond the call, provide teachers with the time they need to do the job, be sure to support the efforts of staff in and out of the classroom.
