I have been working at Ottawa-Carleton District School Board as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The school environment and working along teachers helps professionalize what we do in the eyes of the parents and the public. We learn a lot about implementing curriculum from the teachers and the teachers learn a lot about child development from the educators. The two elements are an effective combination.

    Cons

A ten month seasonal contract makes it difficult to find summer employment. Our salaries are pro-rated for ten months which does not give us a living wage. Although the child care sector makes less per hour, the yearly take home pay for a school board educator in ten months with a 35 hour week is just over $30,000/year. This ends up being less than many child care centre staff.

    Advice to Management

Relook at the wages and educational qualifications for early childhood education staff and implement a salary grid based on educational qualifications in order to retain staff in the long run. Open up more opportunities for career advancement as they are basically 'nil'.

I worked at Ottawa-Carleton District School Board as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Plenty of potential for growth through professional development days, workshops, training, mentoring, etc. Friendly coworkers, for the most part, who were more than willing to help new teachers.

    Cons

It is very difficult to obtain a permanent position. Administration changes every 3-5 years.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be new ways of attracting and keeping good teachers, preventing them from leaving due to lack of permanent work. Maternity leave benefits should be provided to occasional teachers (assuming they work full-time hours).

    Pros

Good benefits, salary, and summers off.

    Cons

Poor inservice training, student/classroom based funding, poor support for extra-curriculars, little incentive for teachers to go above and beyond the call, insufficient time for planning and evaluation.

    Advice to Management

Look for ways to reward those that go above and beyond the call, provide teachers with the time they need to do the job, be sure to support the efforts of staff in and out of the classroom.
