I have been working at Overwatch Systems full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Overwatch is a relatively small operating unit within Textron Systems. You will have the opportunity to make a difference immediately.

    Cons

Only “one deep” is several roles due to size. Several roles perform multiple functions or rely on support from other Textron Systems operating units.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Embrace an open door policy. Solicit employee feedback in multiple methods (one-on-one discussions, skip-level lunches, etc.). Address actions promptly.

I worked at Overwatch Systems full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The corporate headquarters in Austin, TX is a great location and the facility itself is very nice and conducive to collaboration and developers working long hours.

    Cons

The company suffers from bloated middle management and lack of business ethic. Employees supporting federal contracts must maintain a foot out the door and prepare for inevitable layoff.

I have been working at Overwatch Systems full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good location in southwest Austin. If you're lucky, you occasionally get the opportunity to work on new things (IRAD).
Great people to work with who become great network assets (many employees have left after being recruited by other former employees)

    Cons

No insight into company's future past the next few weeks at a time. As a result, management direction is very reactive and not very proactive.
Not able to do things to improve current products or processes unless you have "direct charge", but there's never enough time under the direct charge to improve existing items.
Much of the work we've had lately has been limited to bug fixes the customer prioritizes, not too much new features or fixing internally discovered bugs.
Many coworkers have left for other jobs, leaving the rest of us scrambling.
Extremely hard to get a raise or promotion unless you already are in a level of management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look past the next week or month when making plans and decisions. Find a better way to share knowledge and transition roles upon someone giving their two weeks notice. Think strategically about using indirect money to improve customer's opinions of us and our software quality, rather than chase the same IRAD dreams.

I have been working at Overwatch Systems

    Pros

In the Geospatial office (Sterling VA, Woburn MA, Missoula, MO) the management was changed about a year ago. The company has been revitized and it's a great place to work. Great products, exciting technology and wonderful team oriented people to work with. The VP of the organization knows the business, is honest, truly cares about our customers and employees.

    Cons

As long as the current VP is in place, I don't see any cons

    Keep up the good work

    Pros

For the most part, the people are great.
    You get some good experience.
    Work on some cool projects.
    Good entry level salary.

    Cons

Trying to get any sort of compensation increase is like pulling teeth.
We never really know what's going on with a project.
    Project guidance is minimal.

    Good technologists; poor management

    I worked at Overwatch Systems

    Pros

Senior management pay good; hours flexible; work-life balance good; excellent and patriotic employees. Company was hungry, lost its way

    Cons

Senior management was dysfunctional; values were skewed: large technical debt in code that needed refactoring; tried program of the month for fixes: six sigma, lean, etc. Leadership was incredibly poor. Lower levels of organization pay was not so good. No way to work remotely

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Reboot

I worked at Overwatch Systems full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The work is interesting and meaningful, but your experience will vary tremendously depending on the group you are assigned.

The Textron Innovation Projects are a fantastic opportunity if you have time, energy, and desire to participate. You can either (a) get one day a week carved out for a set number of months to produce something that the company owns, or (b) compete with other engineers for a cash prize.

    Cons

Occasional instabilities when government projects ebb and flow; software quality would sometimes be over-emphasized way too much (very little gets done) or way too little (way too buggy). There were times when we were given very little warning for business trips for us or our team members.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Their vision for the future was not always clear. Aim for sustainable growth.

I have been working at Overwatch Systems full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great location in south Austin. Very nice building, very new. Smart colleagues.

    Cons

Management never had a strategy to move the company beyond the vision of the founder. Management team had a very tactical perspective and lacked solid leadership skills. Spent a lot of time chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow instead of digging into market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand your market. Spend the time, money and resources to upgrade employee skills or hire skills sought by industry instead of pushing the products sitting "on the shelf." There is a reason those products are sitting on the shelf.
