I have been working at Overwatch Systems full-time

    Pros

Company has made it through a tough period in the DoD space and is making some positive strides toward steadying the business. Great location, environment, management has made a ton of improvements for the workforce (relaxed atmosphere, ping pong/foosball, activities, relaxed dress code).

    Cons

Recovering from downturn has seen a lot of good engineers head for the door.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to engage the workforce in new developments in the business area, give them something to look forward to.

I have been working at Overwatch Systems full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The flexible time is really nice (Core hours are 10 to 3 Monday thru Thursday), Nice 2 person offices, Decent pay: (Close to the Average), Fun and challenging projects.

    Cons

Generally, cannot work from home (sometimes with Managers permission).
While pay is average, for most employees, it is low for the higher performers.
Due to the nature of our work, there may be long stretches of "bug fixing" which can reduce the morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work harder to recognize and keep the higher performers.

I have been working at Overwatch Systems full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Money's good if you can get a security clearance. Austin is a nice place to live. Still a few seasoned pros around you can learn from.

    Cons

Constantly changing direction at the whim of Army program management. No job security at all (60 % of Austin employees have been laid off in the last couple of years). They want to be a software service company for the government rather than product developers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look for other opportunities. You're a pretty good bunch of guys but if your bosses at Textron won't allow you to keep promises to your employees you will rapidly lose credibility.

I have been working at Overwatch Systems

    Pros

The people were good to work with. (At least before all of the layoffs and the departures.)

Also, if you thrive on challenges, you'll find them here.

    Cons

Serious brain drain. Between the layoffs and the "getting out while the getting is good", a lot of talented people are no longer with the company.

    I worked at Overwatch Systems

    Pros

    Friendly people and work environment.
    Great Flex time as needed.

    Cons

    Low raises across the board.
Loss of contract equate to lay-offs (no depth of contracts)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manage your existing contracts better (when you get more).
Plan better for the future (stop trying to maint and sell obsolete code base).

    I worked at Overwatch Systems

    Pros

Getting paid for hours over 40 and weekly until 2011
The majority of the people are good to work with
The complexity of the engineering environment gives good opportunity to learn a lot
Nice building and location in south Austin

    Cons

Employees are not empowered to make decisions
Managers only look out for themselves and will throw employees under the bus
They have laid off some really great people with a lot of domain knowledge that would challenge the status quo and kept those that were "yes men" now the ship is sinking even faster.
Wish I didn't still have so much company stock...my portfolio has taken a major hit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start listening to the employees and not the filtered version of management, the ones that are still managers either have no history with the company or no backbone to report what is really going on. Let the employees have some empowerment to make decisions and not feel babysitted by management.

I have been working at Overwatch Systems

    Pros

    South Austin
    Somewhat flexible schedules.
    Accommodating facilities
Talented individuals to work with in a fast pace environment.

    Cons

-Turnover rate goes up, employee morale goes down—the employees who are left feel pressure to carry the load.
-Management engages in career pathing which sometimes forces employees down a road they might not want to go.
-Minimal training on new technology if not associated with your task at hand.
-Team Lead roles not compensated or recognized in a justly manor.
-Upper management out-of-the-loop of middle management actions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Raise awareness that people constitute your biggest asset.

I have been working at Overwatch Systems

    Pros

Flex schedule, covered parking, willingness of others to help

    Cons

Salary, old technology, lack of a vision and work on getting there

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to make sure the customers are happy and are getting what they need.

    I worked at Overwatch Systems

    Pros

Flexible hours, good pay and decent benefits. Reasonably current in Microsoft .NET and C# technologies, but lagging behind in other areas.

    Cons

Complete lack of strategic vision, dwindling contract base, no credible business development plans to replace work being lost, over cronyism in the management ranks, and very poor and sanitized communications between executive and work force.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a strategic vision. Develop a realistic, long term business development plan that acknowledge the DoD acquisition cycles is 18-24 months; not 3-6 months. Bring in qualified, fully prepared executive team to lead company through current difficulties.

    - Good benefits for a small company
    - Casual atmosphere
    - Good salary
    - Interesting work
    - Technically sound employees

    Cons

    - Lost customer focus
    - Chased off long-time senior employees because the GM left in charge felt threatened by them
    - Incompetent senior management
    - Lack of vision and drive in senior management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Advice to Textron:
    - Change the company name to Textron Systems, Austin or some other name without Overwatch in the name
    - Replace those left in charge at the end of 2007
    - Focus on customers and your employees
