Ovum hampered by parent company Informa, which doesn't really want to be in the research business

    I worked at Ovum full-time

    Pros

Great analysts and editorial staff--really driven, experienced, capable people.
Interesting, challenging work for consultants/analysts, and lots of opportunity for industry exposure.
Flexible working conditions--many people work at home.

    Cons

Informa management doesn't really understand the research business, and consequently is driving it into the ground.
Compensation for top analysts not keeping pace with other industry employment options.
Sales force strategy is a mess--management keeps hiring, firing, and losing the wrong people and destabilizing customer interactions, making it hard to analysts/consultants to develop business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Either be in the research business to win or get out. You can't raise the top line by cost-cutting: You need an actual top down business strategy and a plan to achieve it. In terms of personnel, be prepared to pay for quality and morale.

I worked at Ovum full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Flexibility
    Casual Dress Environment
    Open Office Plan
Every "Monday" holiday off (MLK Day, Labor Day, etc)

    Cons

    Parent Company treats employees poorly.
Different compensation for European Employees vs US Employees. European Employees receive better vacation package.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My experience at Ovum was great. However, the parent company treated employees poorly. They also didn't understand the product and the customer expectations. They attempted to change the delivery of the research to fit their model which the customers did not like. They did lose business in the process

I have been working at Ovum full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I love working at Ovum as you are given the opportunity to make an impact on how the company does no matter your role or level. You're surrounded by so many intelligent people who are just pleasant to be around and don't make you feel inferior. Ovum appreciates work-life balance, allowing employees to work from home when necessary. Also you gain free access to a number of training courses offered by parent company Informa.

    Cons

There is a real issue with management. There doesn't seem to be a solid strategy in place for the majority of functions in the business. The senior management team also have an issue with defining a company strategy that can be filtered down and made accessible and easily understood throughout the business. There is also an issue with department working together - many operate siloed.....in particular sales and marketing. The offices are very dated, which makes it a real embarrassment when clients visit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work out where you want to go with the company, how are you going to get there and then share this vision and work with function leads to make it happen.

I have been working at Ovum full-time

    Pros

Satisfying intellectual job, constantly challenges you to improve your knowledge, great colleagues across the globe, brilliant analysts.

    Cons

India office is not attractive as certain management decisions have led to a work culture that is no longer conducive for growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Things need to go back to where they were in 2010 in terms of the way things were managed and the work policies. The present condition is only adding to employee frustration and is sure to cause mass attrition.
